Evidence: Loughner driven mad by Mexican hallucinogen Salvia

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Driven insane by Salvia drug

Jared Loughner was a very disturbed young man driven into depression by a breakup with his girlfriend, possible anger at his parents and the general feeling that he had become a loser.

‘Born loser?’ Jared in high school

He is the type of guy who fell into the self-made rut of never seeming to get things quite right. Because of that he looked beyond himself for the root cause of his troubles and gravitated into the sometimes nightmarish—usually paranoiac—world of conspiracy theories.

Downward spiral with cocktail of death

During a lengthy interview on FOX News, Osler mentioned Loughner’s addiction to marijuana and to Salvia.

FOX, and other media outlets ignored or failed to pick up on the reference to Salvia.

Besides smoking pot, Loughner smoked Salvia. That fact is significant, possibly crucial, in understanding how a young man became increasing unstable and transformed from a deep emotional depression into a raving maniac that decided it was the right thing to stalk and murder a sitting United States Congresswoman and then purposefully shoot 19 bystanders, killing six of them—including a federal judge and sweet little 9-year old girl.

What is Salvia?

Salvia divinorum (also known as “Diviner’s Sage,” “Mexican Mint,” and several other street names), is a plant indigenous to Central and Northwestern Mexico. It has psychotropic properties and has been used by spiritual healers known as shamans for several hundred years.

Although legal in most countries—and most of the U.S.—15 states have banned Salvia and some are planning to regulate it.

The plant is a powerful hallucinogenic and, according to those that have experimented with it, identity is totally lost when under its influence. In that sense, the plant—the strongest natural hallucinogenic known—is more powerful than the synthetically produced LSD.

Although not all of Salvia’s properties have been scientifically documented, the known active chemical of Salvia is a trans-neoclerodane diterpenoid known as “salvinorin A.”

The drug is a true mind bender and users’ anecdotal testimony relates episodes of experiencing different realities, seeing strange entities, developing loss of spatial cognition, perceived energy and pressure changes on the body, flashbacks to childhood or artificial memories, visions of bizarre cartoon-like characters, and sometimes deep-seated feelings of unease, loss of control and rabid paranoia.

Although to date undocumented in scientific literature, thousands of users in the United states have stated that continued use of the drug creates a feeling of isolation and depression. Some have had suicidal thoughts, others felt strong urges to strike out against enemies real or imagined.

Dr. Bryan Roth of Case Western Reserve University conducted a study on Salvia and found some very disturbing qualities about the drug….

I knew this type of ridiculous and irresponsible articles would start coming out… There is ZERO clinical, scientific, OR medical evidence that has EVER linked cannabis to violence.

Just another example of the government and the media USING a tragedy to push an agenda.

“Reefer Madness” all over again – When are people going to make people responsible for their OWN thoughts and actions instead of laying the blame on outside influences?

There are TENS OF MILLIONS of Americans and hundreds of millions of people worldwide who are using cannabis on a near daily basis who DO NOT commit acts of violence.

There is also clinical, scientific and medical evidence that there is ZERO addiction to cannabis…

I for one am SICK AND TIRED of false reporting just for the purposes of furthering a particular agenda.

salvia divinorum is an interesting substance…
barely active orally, but quite active when smoked…
unless you are the 15-20% of the population that does NOT get major effects even when smoking salvia divinorum.

to compare salvia divinorum to cannabis would probably be disputed by the majority of users…
I have found in the LOW dosage ranges, that salvia divinorum can create some cannabis like effects…but usually with accompanying dysphoric side effects.

vendors and a few scientists that have worked with the plant for over a decade have lay claim that salvia divinorum usually creates a 1 in 10 “return ratio”….that is, only 1 in 10 people that try it will ever want to repeat the experiment.

the problem with controlling salvia divinorum is complex in my opinion…
at the moment, many colleges, institutions, corporations are using the active ingredients of salvia divinorum as new lead compounds for targeted research into the creation of new medicines such as low addiction potential opioid painkillers and the next type of anti depressants possibly on the horizon.
so to illegalize salvia divinorum at this point, would stop legitimate research, and basically dump very expensive research programs in the trash.
I suggest if federally controlled at all, that salvia divinorum be controlled as a schedule 2 substance.
In the future, certian states may have to change drug laws where salvia divinorum has been controlled, as certian new medicines may in effect be created from salvia divinorum.

I think prohibition of this plant federally would probably cause further problems at the border, it would also create another plant material that grows well in Mexico into the hands of the drug cartels.
believe me, Mexican cartels are considering what drugs they may replace cannabis with, when and if California further legalizes cannabis.
salvia divinorums active diterpene molecule, salvinorin a, is highly potent,…but also, quite prevalent in the plant.
up to 2 grams of pure substance can be pulled from each kilo of plant material, give or take.
people commonly use microgram to milligram amounts…
that is, a “dose” could be considered anywhere a tenth of a milligram, to a few milligrams for the “hard heads”
salvinorin a can be extracted with acetone, ethanol, and H2O, among other easily obtained, legal solvents.
pushing another natural substance into the controlled substance act will probably KILL MORE PEOPLE in the end, than might ever happen from the direct effects of the short acting substance.

did salvia divinorum cause this man to “go mad” can commit an atrocity?
      I doubt it,
but that is just my opinion,
the title of this article, is NOT a fact, but an opinion, and I think this website is HIGHLY negligent for publishing such inflammatory BS.
