DPS building in Phoenix evacuated after bomb threat

Arizona Department of Public safety officials evacuated their headquartersSunday night after a bomb threat, authorities said.

A Phoenix police spokesman, Sgt. Steve Martos, said an individual called 911 from a cellphone in the area of 21st Avenue and Thomas Road and referenced a “bomb” and a police “building.”

DPS’ dispatch center is nearby, and the state agency evacuated employees after Phoenix police notified them of the possible threat.

A DPS spokesman, Bob Bailey, said, “Our headquarters complex was evacuated around

9 p.m. due to a bomb threat called into the Phoenix Police Department dispatch center.

Our 911 calls are being handled by Phoenix PD, and our Tucson and Flagstaff dispatch

centers have taken over our dispatch responsibilities for the Phoenix metro area.

“Our DPS Explosive and Ordnance Disposal are conducting a sweep of our headquarters complex,

which encompasses 20th to 22nd avenue and Encanto Boulevard.”
