October 8, 1871: The Night America Burned

The Great Chicago Fire is the most famous inferno in American history. But it wasn’t even the worst fire that night. This is the story of America’s most fiery night, and the crackpot theory about a lost comet that’s meant to explain what really happened.

The Reasonably Great Chicago Fire

Citywide fires are now largely a relic of an earlier time, a product of slipshod urban firing and too many flammable building materials. A few of these fires have gained lasting infamy – there’s the Great Fire of Rome in 64 CE, in which Emperor Nero supposedly got in some fiddle practice, and the Great Fire of London in 1666, which everyone knows was started when the Doctor fought a rogue Terileptil . But the Great Chicago Fire probably has the greatest grip on the popular imagination, in part because it’s one of the most recent and in part because of all the ridiculous (and flagrantly anti-Irish) myths that have popped up around it.

The Great Michigan Fire

There were five major fires that burned in the Midwest on October 8, 1871: the Great Chicago Fire, the Great Peshtigo Fire, the Holland Fire, the Port Huron Fire, and the Manistee Fire. Those last three all refer to towns in Michigan, and they tend to be referred to collectively as the Great Michigan Fire. Like Peshtigo and the surrounding area of Wisconsin, Michigan had also experienced a lengthy drought that had left the dense forests dry and particularly susceptible to fire. Like Peshtigo, local loggers had left much of their debris around without properly disposing of it, providing a ready fuel for the coming inferno.

The strong winds that had ignited the Peshtigo firestorm and had worsened the blaze in Chicago now made their way further eastward to Michigan. The blazes spanned the entire state, affecting both the western towns of Manistee and Holland as well as Port Huron on the state’s eastern region, popularly known as “The Thumb.” These fires might seem less devastating than the maelstrom that had engulfed Peshtigo – they each killed “only” 50 to 100 people – but they still their own particular brand of hell on Earth. Julian Assange posted a tweet with a picture of a Chess game already in play. At first, it was confusing, but then someone figured out it was a specific game in history.

This was a game played in 1918 between Jose Capablanca and Frank Marshall. Marshall, an American, was the underdog. At this point in the game, they were at move 24. Black (Capablanca) had just moved bishop back to infront of Queen. The next move by Marshall (White) was unexpected and is now famously known as the Marshall attack.

History of National Chess Day

The game of chess got its start many centuries ago, as early as 600 AD, with a similar game from India known as chaturanga, which was likely an ancestor of chess. This game was likely used as a way to promote strategic training for those in the military.

It was probably several hundred years later that chess, as it is known today, developed. Books about chess were published as early as the 16th century and one of the earliest famous players was a Spanish priest by the name of Ruy Lopez.

In the United States in 1976, then President Gerald Ford declared October 9 to be National Chess Day, and it has stuck since then. With more than 100 countries recognizing chess as a sport, National Chess Day is not only a national celebration but can also be extended internationally and all around the world!

Supreme Court welcomes the public again, and a new justice

The new member of the court, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, wasted no time joining the lively give-and-take, asking questions throughout nearly two hours of arguments in the dispute over the nation’s main anti-water pollution law, the Clean Water Act.

Jackson, appointed by President Joe Biden, seemed to be generally aligned with the court’s other two liberal justices in favor of Justice Department arguments to preserve the authority of the federal government to regulate wetlands under the Clean Water Act against a business-backed challenge.

Forty-seven percent of U.S. adults say they have “a great deal” or “a fair amount” of trust in the judicial branch of the federal government that is headed by the Supreme Court. This represents a 20-percentage-point drop from two years ago, including seven points since last year, and is now the lowest in Gallup’s trend by six points. The judicial branch’s current tarnished image contrasts with trust levels exceeding two-thirds in most years in Gallup’s trend that began in 1972.

The Croatian weekly magazine Express published the faces of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Italian soon-to-be Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán with Hitler mustaches under the headline “Achtung [beware]: Croatia between three mini-Fascisms. “While these three politicians are indeed right-wing conservatives, to brand them as Nazis is simply a disgusting and unfair description, which is in extremely poor taste and an insult to the victims of the Nazis,” according to Holocaust historian Dr. Efraim Zuroff, the Wiesenthal Center’s Director of Eastern European Affairs.
