8 Unusual Ways to Cut Expenses and Save Money Every Month

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Are you finding that you don’t have any money left at the end of almost every month?

This is an issue that far too many Americans are facing at the moment. One recent study revealed that about 60% of people spend either all their income each month or, in some cases, more money than they’re even bringing in.

If you fall into this category, it’s time for you to make some serious changes. You need to figure out ways to cut expenses so that you’re not spending every last dollar that you make.

Here are eight unusual ways to cut expenses and set more money aside in your savings account.

1. Create a Monthly Budget

It’s going to be awfully hard to find ways to cut expenses from your budget if you don’t have a budget in place.

Fortunately, almost 70% of American households have a budget that they use. But that means that almost one-third of people aren’t relying on a budget to keep their finances on track.

Setting up a budget will show you the different areas in which you’re spending your money. It’ll also help you find ways that you can scale back on some of your expenses.

There is a good chance that you could free up hundreds of dollars every month by budgeting your money better than you are now. It’ll take some hard work on your part to get your budget off the ground, but it’ll be well worth it in the end.

2. Eliminate Your Car Payment

The average car payment has risen all the way up over the $500 per month mark. If you’re paying that much for your car, just consider how much an extra $500 or more would help you out every month.

Think about selling your current car and paying cash for a much cheaper option. It might not be anywhere near as nice as your current car, but as long as it gets you from point A to point B without any major issues, it’ll get the job done and allow you to save a significant amount of money every month.

3. Stop Eating out All the Time

You might not think that you’re spending much on eating out if you only eat out once a week or so. But on average, Americans are spending more than $3,000 every year eating at restaurants.

It’s OK to eat out every now and then. But generally speaking, you and your family should limit how often you eat out to save money. You’ll also eat healthier when you eat at home as opposed to eating out all the time.

4. Cancel Your Cable Service

More than 30 million Americans have made the decision to cancel their cable service in recent years. It’s saving them hundreds of dollars every month and thousands of dollars every year.

And many of them don’t feel like they’re missing out on anything by not having cable. They’re using old-school antennas to get their local TV channels and using streaming services like Netflix to keep themselves entertained.

The thought of canceling your cable might sound absurd when you first do it. But within just a few months, you won’t even miss it.

5. Ditch Your Gym Membership

About 80% of Americans aren’t getting enough exercise on a regular basis. With that in mind, we are not suggesting that the people who do work out stop going to the gym.

What we are suggesting, though, is that people who spend a small fortune should reconsider the way they’re working out. If, for example, you’re paying $75 a month to go run on a treadmill at the gym, why not start running at your local park instead?

You can get the same amount of exercise you’re getting now without paying so much money for it.

6. Clip Coupons When You Shop

On average, people receive about 1,000 coupons each year. This includes both coupons sent to them in the mail and coupons delivered to their email inboxes.

When you’re getting ready to make a purchase of just about any kind, you should always look to see if you can find coupons for it first. You can use coupons on everything from food to electronics these days and save money.

7. Kick Bad Habits to the Curb

Do you smoke cigarettes? You’re likely well aware of how expensive of a habit it can be.

Cigarettes cost about $6.30 per pack on average. That works out to be an annual expense of about $2,300 for those who smoke one pack of cigarettes each day.

It’s not easy to quit smoking cigarettes. But once you see how much money it can save you, you’ll be more motivated than ever before to stop.

There are also all kinds of other bad habits that could be eating into your savings. From drinking to gambling, you should eliminate these bad habits from your life as soon as you can since it’s one of the most effective ways to cut expenses.

8. Stop Paying So Many Late Fees

As a whole, Americans pay about $10 billion in late fees on credit card payments every year. Many people don’t have enough money to make credit card payments on time and end up paying the price for it.

Are you stuck in this vicious cycle right now? It might be time to get out of it by using one of the many personal loans available to you.

You can take control of your credit cards by utilizing a loan to consolidate whatever debt you have. It’ll make it easier to stay on schedule when paying your debt down so that you don’t encounter late fees anymore.

Take Advantage of the Different Ways to Cut Expenses

It’s impossible to get rid of all the expenses in your life. You’re always going to have at least a few of them lingering around.

But as you’ve seen, there are so many ways to cut expenses so that you aren’t spending all your money on them every month. You’ll feel better about your financial future when you eliminate a lot of these expenses and focus on saving more money as you move forward.
