How Can We Make Before It's News Better
Before It’s News editors and administrators would like to take the pulse of our readers on how we might improve the website. Please leave any suggestions and comments you have in the comments section.
#1 Why are there so many fake stories on Before It’s News?
Our web site is operated differently than what most people consider to be a regular news site. This is a news hosting website, and the stories that make it to the front page do so based on popularity. Anyone is welcome to post a story. The door is wide open here at Before It’s News, and there’s no other place on the Internet where anyone can come in off the street, post a story and get it in front of a huge audience.
This concept of a truly free website doesn’t really exist anymore. We don’t censor anything on the site, except for Terms of Service violations and when people complain. It’s YouTube for news. That’s all it is. We do try to keep hoaxes from joke websites out of Editor’s Picks, but we do get fooled from time to time and when those hoaxes are discovered they are removed from Editor’s Picks. They are also removed from the Top 50 but they can still be found on the website.
#2 Before It’s News receives two to three thousand stories a day. The editors are constantly scanning incoming stories to find the best news for Editor’s Picks on the right hand side of the Top 50 page.
If you as a reader would like to see more stories from a particular category, we would like to know. If you think one story topic is receiving too much attention in Editor’s Picks, we would also like to know.
#3 Before It’s News has had two home pages; the page you currently see and the page now known as Before It’s News Classic Home. We are interested in knowing which home page you prefer or if some elements of both pages should be used to create a new home page that would be a hybrid of the two.
Should our current home page also include a column for the top Alternative Stories as well as the Top News stories so that paranormal and UFO news can be easily found without it mixing with harder news? Should columns showing the top stories for the most popular categories exist below the Top 50 stories in the center of the page on the current home page so that a reader could scroll down instead of clicking over to Classic Home to find those columns?
#4 Are we missing some categories that you would like to see? If so, what are they?
#5 Recently we have begun changing headline styles so that they will conform to the AP style guide by removing excessive capitalization and the use of extraneous symbols, exclamation points and question marks
#6 Some people think that Before It’s News is full of malware or viruses. It is not. Malware and viruses are associated with the ads from advertising networks. The ads that you see are not the ads that other people see reading the same story. The ads you see are often based on your search habits. Our partners operating the ad networks are diligent about removing malicious code from ads, but often the malicious code is added after an ad has been removed. This is a problem for all website. If you are redirected to another website or receive a virus or malware warning, we want to know so that we can pass the information along to the ad network to remove the malicious ad.
The information that is most helpful to help us track down these ads, is the URL of the story you were reading when you were redirected, and the URL to the website you were redirected too. Also, any ads that you may have seen on the page where you were redirected. If you are using software that alerts you to the IP address of the malicious code, having that address is also helpful.”

This is the type of comment and choice of words I would expect from Steve Quayle. It is my opinion that LaverderRose IS actually Steve Quayle himself because of the excellent and artistic photography, type of photography (much of it aerial), the subjects presented an how they are presented.
Steve’s brilliance can’t be hidden. He has a genius level IQ. but it also must be pointed out that the fact that he feels unappreciated is also obvious.
I have followed Steve for years and I recognize his writing/speaking style and temperament.
Closing down the comments section is reminiscent of what Steve does in Hagmann’s chat room. LavenderRose has done the same thing and now wants to delete comments. Very controlling IMO and very Steve like.

Name calling such as calling people who disagree with him “morons” and crying “slander…..defamation” is very typical of Steve’s angry responses to his critics. Forums and boards across the internet are replete with such comments found in emails received from Steve because they have posted them in self defense/retaliation.
But some of us are not morons at all. In Fact some of us are very observant with excellent memories. Some of us have excellent analysis skills.

You seem to base ‘popular’ on the number of clicks. Do you also include the time spent on the page ?
I ask this because you have some regular contributors who have worked out that the more ‘alarming’ they can make the headline, the more clicks they get. You in turn assume this to be a good article from a popular contributor when in fact it is all because of an over glorified heading and an in-house promotional system that needs to be changed.
To overcome this you need to have the authors / contributors name along with the headline so that the regular readers can recognise the fear mungers who appear to have a regular routine of daily dribble and deceit.
I think what you are doing now is great and even though there are trolls and fakes now and then, pretty much it becomes easy to tell who they are and avoid and ignore them or their comments are voted down and out so I like the way you are doing it making popularity by the number of views as the way to prioritize the stories. Kudos for doing a great job!

I have been a long time reader, BIN has be my source of Alternative Media for years. I first came to BIN when it was going through a large growth spurt in readers. BIN was Hot, and Alternative media was boiling with excitement because everyone was learning how generally fuct we all are. BIN was putting up stories that were not found anywhere else. The ratio of quality to crap was in favor of quality. The stories were helpful, informative, and insightful. To this day BIN is one my default media sources, but only out of habit.
Once upon a time I believe that BIN was a good source of media and people flocked to them for information. I think that people starting providing BIN information that made an impact. I think that impact became too large and the Wicked Feds bridled the Editor of BIN. I believe the Site has been under FED scrutiny since that day and that BIN has forfeited the gravity that once drew information to them.
Times are a changing and the Grasp of Fed control is growing tighter. The watered down stories and topics found on this site are still pertinent to our future lives. The ratio of quality to crap has been in favor of the crap for a time now. As a reader of BIN you have to filter the solids out more frequently but there are still a few gems to be found.

If a site or radio show is allowed to get a little too large, that should be a red flag. If an app asks to access seemingly irrelevant information, that should be a red flag, even if the site handler cries loudly how “Trusted” the app is and that the author is in the “Circle of Trust”! I agree wholeheartedly… there are no headline guidelines on this site and there needs to be, and they need to be enforced. When people come to the site, they see headlines, it is the most important part of the site. If people are allowed to run amuck with headlines, the site itself will eventually run amuck. BIN could be a ten times more popular, there is just much dishonesty in the headlines.
Headlines should be limited in length and they should give those who are deciding whether or not to click on them a brief summary of what the post is about. There are a few on this site who have made an art of playing upon peoples emotions in order to get them to click on their posts that are otherwise not very interesting.
Contributors should also be allowed to remove troll and hate comments, they serve no purpose and defeat the very purpose of commenting, which is to have a meaningful exchange of ideas, people have a misplaced notion that everyone should be able to say whatever they want. Idiotic and hateful comments are not acceptable in public places so they should not be acceptable in public forums either. Give the power to the contributors to monitor their own posts. It would improve this site tremendously.

Please remove the option for contributors to disable comments. This is a blatant suppression of free speech and casts doubt on those writers who seem fearful of what responses they might elicit. My burning question is why would any writer disable comments?

What I did not tell you is this: because I believed these radio personalities when they said that there would be a an economic crash in 2012 with bank failures/closures, I made a large purchase of silver from one of them. What they said was absolutely eminent, did not happen then and has not happened yet. IT MAY NEVER HAPPEN.

We also get far too many infomercials where posts just try to get members to buy or vist another site with little to no real content.
There needs to be a way that stories that seem important ( like economic issues) are not Christian bible thumping articles quoting the bible as so-called proof. It is infuriating to see a headline like “economic collapse imminent ” only to get halfway down the article and and see according to mark 5 chapter blah blah blah. Some of us don’t believe in any book written by humans to be holy.

How about stop treating your top contributors like second had citizens. They are the ones who are generating most of the traffic to the site so they should take president over those who are lower in rank. They are the ones who are generating the articles most people come here to read. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out. The favoritism is outrageous and the viewers see this. If the Associated Press ran there site like this would there be any question why they are one of the top news site out there? Ban the contributors who keep posting fear porn, and what I mean by fear porn is crap like “The world will end this coming Saturday”. The date comes and goes and poof guess what? Nothing ever happens. There should be a three strike rule, if you are going to post some fear porn and it doesn’t come true you get a mark. After three you are gone, so tired of the fake stories.
The editors could also be more vigilant of these types of stories or others by certain authors as they NEVER COME TRUE, all it does is discredit this site and all the other stories that could prove more useful. Same with stories about asteroids hitting the earth next weekend, nuclear attack planned for some major city, etc. It never comes true and to allow these “contributors” to continue to post such just when time and time again it doesn’t happen is almost the same as condoning the junk being posted.
Looking at the Top 50 I just shake my head, filled with so much crap. I’m beginning to think the editors support and actually believe the stuff they are letting get posted and that is kinda scary. We need NEWS and breaking NEWS. NOT bs by all that disagree with a story or headline. Today we really need

Such as a click able word in their story that links to that source. Wala. If they have no source that is verifiable, they must state it as their own opinion within that wording.

One siimple rule: Fully vet all authors and enforce a new requirement that they use their ‘personal identity’.
In other words, no more aliases. Being held accountable for what is written will by default result in higher-quality articles.
How to make this site better? You can ask the citizen posters to clarify dates better. For instance – the post about 72 dead and 200 wounded. This was, IMHO, a trolling post. It was deceptive because the article made it appear current at the beginning. If people want better quality posts then specific information must be included.

Basically the site works as is, That being said there are 2 things I would make some adjustments too.
1- The abuse of the “Fear Porn” Headline, I’ve clicked on many stories and honestly the headline teaser isn’t even referenced until 30min into a video by someone other than the author, or after reading 2 pages of the author’s opinion and not really touching on the mentioned idea in the headline.
2- It would be nice if you expanded the “Top Stories” and “Most Recent Stories” to 20 links instead of 10.
Other than that the site is good.
Tighten up on what is placed on the website. It seems to the usual ‘end of the world’ articles that never happen. Also, do not place one article in so many other categories. clean up the comment section to eliminate trolls and crude slander against the article authors.

I find your categories very unhelpful at times when amajor story breaks. Case in point mh370. This clearly requires a category set up immediately so that all posts related can be found. As it was those stories ended up straddled across many categories and could never be found. A system of cat and subcat could be used, such as Disaster/mh370.
Also, you will increasingly find that socalled hard news is not the real news, it is simply a level of perception. As your subscribers become more aware the softer news will predominate for nothing is really as it initially seems. So please do not attempt a division of these categories as they will morph with time.
Finally, i always seem to end up with multiple windows of main page open. Pls close them down when i select a new story.

Add a fact check feature to the BIN forum. The assertions of both contributors and responders are not always right on the money. Some provide articulate irrefutable information. Some miss the mark by a fraction. Still others offer sheer fabrication or science fiction. If BIN would just take a little time to validate, or repudiate all information being distributed as fact by the authors and responders alike, with a name like Before It’s News the potential for becoming a leading resource for alternative news is there. The the very first measurable benefit will be a large portion of the sewage making it’s way down the pipeline of this forum will slow down, possibly come to a halt. After all, what idiot is going to want to be fudging the facts in a place where deception isn’t welcome and they’ll definitely be exposed as a con. Second this new found credibility will make BIN a more trusted and valued resource for attracting news junkies like myself. The bottom line, the way I see it, would be increased readership and advertising profits. I’m certain everyone from your readership, who will finally get the strait and accurate skinning in one place, to the owner who will feel his pocket getting heavier, will be please with that!
In closing may I offer some insight; It is a critical time in media. Once the humiliation of deception equals the rib splitting laughter of those who gaze upon it, to the receiver all value has been denied, credibility swept away, leaving first a whisper, then silence nothing more! The “new” format home page is fine except for the Top 50 resorting themselves every few seconds. That’s a real PITA, especially when viewing on a tablet.
Solution: Put a button near the top of the page to disable automatic resorting of the Top 50 during the current session.
Related issue:
The page layout of the “new” home page doesn’t work well in portrait mode on a small to mid-sized tablet. Stuff jumbles everywhere, often overlapping.
Solution: Create an alternate home page, similar to the “new” page, with better layout for use with portrait mode on tablets.

It makes your page difficult to load (continues to freeze up) and makes your site look like a tabloid site that is only there to earn advertising revenue.
You need to SHUT DOWN all the ads. Why? Because they are all video ads and whoever is running the ads for your page is scamming you.
When I visit your page, the video ads start automatically. I have not even clicked them and the video and sound start automatically.
Shut down all the ads. Only have text ads. Or, better yet, have NO ADS, and I will gladly pay $1 to $3 a month.
I suppose I should sign up for RSS or something, but if it re-directs me to your website with all these ads, what’s the point.
Your website is my favorite website on the internet. At the same time, because of the ads, it is the most frustrating.
I keep coming back for the stories (thank you for being democratic and letting the most popular stories be voted up.) I keep leaving because of the ads (freezes up the page, video ads, looks spammy).

I have mixed feelings about the option to vote a Comment down.
I do not mind negative comments but when they disappear because of being voted too many times it gets a little tedious having to click “show” button all the time. BUT I ALWAYS DO AND SO DO YOU!
Here is where my mixed feelings come in. I know that my comment is actually getting MORE attention because being hidden makes it MORE enticing not LESS.
