Trendy Beadboard Paneling Ideas to Freshen Up a Space
Beadboard paneling is a timeless wood decorating trend used on walls or ceilings. These solutions consist of thin wood strips with tongue-and-groove-style seams. Akin to board and batten wainscoting, beadboard paneling can be installed upright or horizontally for a fresh and modern feel.
Where Does Beadboard Paneling Work?
Moisture-resistant beadboard paneling works well in areas where moisture tends to linger in the air, thanks to the built-in space for expansion that ensures the wood doesn’t crack. This feature also makes beadboard paneling an excellent pick for high-traffic areas. For one, a few scuffs and dings on beadboard paneled entertainment spaces will only add to the surface’s relaxed charm instead of making the room feel dingy and unclean.
The best part is that beadboard paneling works almost anywhere, including family rooms, dining rooms, home offices, or as decorative elements in master bathrooms.
On top of making your high-traffic spaces look clean, here’s why beadboard paneling is worth the investment:
- Protects your walls from kids and pets while masking existing damage to walls behind the panel
- Classic décor—beadboard paneling is a timeless style
- Easy to install or uninstall as you wish
- Breaks up spaces, creating cozier and more welcoming rooms
Add texture plus class to your space. Let’s delve into how to install beadboard paneling.
Pick Your Paneling
First, select materials suited to the temperature and humidity of the spaces where you intend to install them. Beadboard paneling often requires 48 hrs of acclimation, if possible, with spacers in between panels to foster air circulation. If you want to paint the paneling, please do so before installation. Beaded paneling is available in finished, pre-primed, and unfinished forms.
Create interest in spaces by installing beadboard paneling—such a project will change your home!
Materials and tools needed
- Liquid nails
- Roll frog tape
- Kraft paper roll
- Jig saw
- Waterproof caulk and seal
- Stud finder
- Flat head nails
- Tape measure
How to Install
Step #1: Prep the Room—typically, construction projects call for deconstruction to some extent.
Step #2: Remove and replace sheetrock as required—maintain the same thickness level, preferably ½-inch, in preparation for the beadboard.
Step #3: Mark the studs with tape, pencil, or a marker—this allows you to locate the solid points.
Step #4: Create a template—typically, beadboards come in 4” by 8” sheets. Make replicas out of Kraft paper. Pin it on the wall and trace what you need to cut around, including pipes, electricals, or cabinets.
Step #5: Trim the template with a jig saw—mark and cut the holes, then transfer the outline onto the beadboard sheet using a marker. Next, cut as needed with a jig saw.
Step #6: Glue to sub-surface with adhesives and then nail each piece along the top, lower side, and corner to hide the finish nail holes.
Step #7: Caulk as needed and paint to finish it off.
Step #8: Reinstall light and electrical fixtures to complete the beadboard installation.
Tips to Add Life to This Timeless Trend
With the proper styling, beadboard detailing can quickly transform a space—making a room feel “classy.”
- Make it Mint Green—yields a vintage influence, with the contrast between the mild mint color, wooden vanity, and black sconces showcasing visual balance and style.
- Mix Materials—To blend beadboard into a room, juxtapose the paneling with modern materials, such as subway tiles and marble, for a contemporary twist.
- Make the Palette White and Bright—tonal whites support each other, providing a perfect canvas for different items to shine, like indoor plants and decorative bottles.
- Complement with Vintage Art—Pair the beadboards with vintage-inspired curved mirrors and art.
- Make it Dark and Moody—take a risk and incorporate color into your space. Be mindful of the light source.
- Make it Modern—chic accents bring things to life. Sleek vanity creates a nice contrast that’s noteworthy.
- Stand Out with Sconces—whereas white beadboard paneling acts like a blank slate that creates textural interest, gold accents, and sconces complement the beadboard backdrop.
