Ingredients of Character

Joanna Bourne, Historical Romance

I was thinking the other day about how we create characters, since I’m trying to do some of that.

What are the ingredients we knead and stir and bake into characters? How do these people end up knocking around inside our brains, anyway? Where do they come from?

Some of the sparks that grew into Marguerite in Forbidden Rose were real spies.

Consider Marie-Madeleine Bridou. (She ended up Marguerite in the book instead of Madeleine as a nod to The Scarlet Pimpernel. Jo waves. Hello, Scarlet Pimpernel.)

Read about Bridou here, here, and here.

She chose the code name Hedgehog because, as one of her colleagues put it, “it’s a tough little animal that even a lion would hesitate to bite.”

You will be pleased to know Bridou worked for a publishing company.  Heroic people, those who work in publishing.

RITA-winning author Joanna Bourne writes historical fiction set in Revolutionary and Napoleonic France and Regency England. It was a time of love and sacrifice, clashing ideals, and really cool clothing.

The interesting thing about story is that we can
create a character… and then a separate environment..
and then a plot… and then study the character creation to
see how the character will react against the environment and plot.

Some writers are more to the character side and others to the plot, but once
the writer has decided, both the character and plot are already in motion before
the author goes to work. It is as if the story has already been written.

A writer without a priority and an empty canvass is hit with a tsunami of possibilities.
Any story about any one or anything is possible. However, once the writer starts making decisions…
the limitations start. With each decision the story possibilities become more and more limited.

Our real lives are similar. With each decision comes a closing of possibilities. We have our life plots… non of which we control.. we also have our characters, that we work on, but we have to admit that we don’t control very well. We are who we are. Put is in a candid camera moment and our character will react to the plot automatically by predetermined factors.

Real people going through real life character/plot are not like the people we see on screen. The people we see on screen are actors pretending to be normies like us… who rose above the fray… and found a way to be exceptional. Often times, the characters chosen on our screens to rise above the fray are not exceptional at all… in fact, sometimes…
