His thinking was that the children walked to and from school through all areas of the town, so each child provides a walking advertisement.  In addition, the kids would wear the bag everyday, and then be seen everyday.  In the end, he printed the message and gave out the bags to the kids for free.  Thus begins the very same idea of promotional products as we have today.
