Arunachal hydropower can bring economic development, says Modi

Itanagar, Feb 20 (KNN) Referring to the immense hydropower potential of the state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Arunachal Pradesh can harness hydropower to transform their economy by providing electricity to the entire country. He called for development of the state`s hydropower potential and at the same time stressed upon providing proper compensation to people who get displaced by hydropower projects.

Modi inaugurated the Festival of Arunachal 2015 and released a souvenir to mark its 29th Statehood Day. He inaugurated a water supply scheme for Itanagar and laid the foundation stone of a 132 KV transmission line.

The prime minister flagged off an AC Express train between Naharlagun and New Delhi and the Inter-City Express between Naharlagun and Guwahati. He dedicated Harmuti-Naharlagun rail line to the nation.

He said poor connectivity is the biggest reason for the under-development in the north-east region, and these projects would contribute in improving the connectivity.

Further, Modi said his government plans to establish new six agricultural universities in the northeast region which could become a major centre for organic farming, famous around the world.

He said ministers and senior officers of the Union Government are now working in close coordination with the northeast states to remove bottlenecks in development.

Governor of Arunachal Pradesh Nirbhay Sharma, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu, the Union MoS for Railways Manoj Sinha and the Union MoS for Home Kiren Rijiju were present on the occasion. (KNN/ST)
