How to Get Promoted at Work ASAP

Getting promoted at work may not be as easy as it used to be. In previous generations, promotions often came regularly as a result of hard work and staying with the same company your whole career. But nowadays, competition is fierce. People change jobs an average of 12 times during their working years. This means that fresh faces with more experience are competing for your job all the time. The question, then, is, “How do you make yourself valuable enough to your employer to win that promotion over all the other candidates?” Here are a few tips that will help you get ahead.

Hone your writing skills

If you’re a high-level executive in a major corporation, you’ll likely have many writing tasks you never expected. You’ll have reports and handouts to come up with for board meetings, annual progress reports, and marketing write-ups due at least once a quarter. And for a lot of people, writing can be a weak area. But even for those who are pros at the task sometimes lack the time to spend on these projects. That’s where a writing service comes in.

Many people only seek out Ultius writing service during college. But what you may not realize is that these types of services are also excellent for creating work documents. And most of them allow chats so that you can specify your exact expectations. Or they can even take your rough drafts and turn them into works of art.

Always RSVP “yes”

Office parties are not everyone’s favorite. But unfortunately, they may be your only chance to stay in your boss’ sights. Socializing with management and getting in front of those VPs you never see at work might give you an edge over the guys who don’t show up. In fact, many business deals are made at the office after-parties. And who do you think they’ll pick to lead the next project while they’re discussing the details? Certainly not your co-worker who’s home on his couch.

Of course, with socializing comes a lot more responsibility. Always remember where you are, no matter how friendly your team leaders get. Speak respectfully to everyone in the room, including the waitstaff. And refrain from having more than a couple of cocktails.

Never stop learning

If you keep getting passed up for promotions, you could be doing a few things wrong. But one thing could simply be that you don’t have the skills or education necessary to move up the ladder. And even if you feel you do, other candidates could be ahead of you in that area.

Among the best ways to make sure you are promotion-worthy is to keep honing and adding to your skillset. This means soft skills, such as conflict management and communication. But it also means the exact skills to do your job.

You don’t necessarily have to go back to college to further your education, although it certainly doesn’t hurt. Instead, you can take extra training and attend seminars that will help you expand your horizons. And even if your company doesn’t pay for extra training, take them on your own. Consider it an investment in your future, whether with this job or one down the road.

Just ask

Many people overlook the obvious because they just assume they’ll be turned down. But if you feel you’re ready for the promotion, put together a proposal to let your boss know why. Sometimes, they’re just looking for someone to take the initiative. And even if they aren’t, they’ll probably still be pleasantly surprised when you do.
