Have you ever seen the different tax deductions on your paycheck? Well, if you have not, then allow us to tell you that, along with the basic tax deductions, you will see a tax deduction under the name OASDI. Now, I am sure that you have questioned this tax and what it means. As an employee, you need to know about the chunks of money that are deducted from your salary, and this is why this article aims to explore everything that you are required to know about the OASDI Tax, with the OASDI Meaning.
Introduction to the OASDI Tax
The OASDI Tax is an important tax, along with the Medicare Tax, that people need to pay as a part of their future retirement plans. Known as the Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance, the tax is a part of the Federal Social Security Program, which ensures financial support to people after their retirement, any form of disability and death (to dependents).
The tax is administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) and uses two different trust funds to store and disburse amounts. The tax is shared between the employee and employer; however, in the case of a self-employed individual, he/she alone will pay the entire amount.
Does the OASDI Tax vary from the Social Security Tax?
Because Social Security and OASDI are the same plan, the taxes, eligibility standards, and benefit levels are equal. On an employee’s paycheck, a deduction for OASDI—that is, a necessary deduction to cover their Social Security taxes—is likely to show up.
OASDI is not, however, the same as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a different program under SSA. SSI primarily aims at people who are blind, 65 years of age or older, have a known disability, and have little income and resources.
Generally speaking, if you are eligible for SSI, you are probably also eligible for OASDI, but not everyone who qualifies for OASDI also qualifies for SSI.
Understanding the Eligibility Requirements and Benefits of the OASDI Tax
Along with learning what is OASDI Tax, it is imperative to know about the eligibility requirements of this tax and the benefits that you will receive from the same.
Generally, the eligibility of the tax depends on the time period an employee has worked nd the total ‘work credits’ that they have accumulated. Once an employee has enough credit, i.e. 40 credits, they will be eligible for the programs and their benefits. As of 2025, an employee earns one credit after they have earned $1810 in wages; however, this amount is altered every year. This calculation allows employees to earn up to 4 credits in a single year.
