Uber is executing a very interesting strategy in the robotaxi space. Rather than building its own self-driving fleet, Uber is partnering with major manufacturers in the autonomous electric vehicle industry instead.
Uber has a developed a dedicated framework called Uber Autonomous Solutions, to supply autonomous vehicle manufacturers with infrastructure, demand generation, and fleet management. Uber has also committed billions of dollars toward vehicle procurement and deployment deals.
Highlights of Uber’s autonomous vehicle dealmaking include:
- A Partnership With Rivian: Uber has a multi-year deal worth up to $1.25 billion investment with the aim to deploy up to 50,000 Rivian R2 robotaxis exclusively under Uber’s platform starting in 2028.
- The Lucid and Nuro Collaboration: Uber has backed a plan for tens of thousands of Lucid electric vehicles to be integrated with Nuro’s automated driving technology.
- Zoox Integration: An Amazon-backed Zoox partnership for robotaxis operating directly under the Uber app, starting in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
Uber marketplace strategy will allow it to compete with large scale robotaxi manufacturers like Waymo and Tesla. Uber is transforming itself from a traditional ride-hailing app into the world’s most widely used operating system for robotaxis.
