  China is Number One in Skyscrapers

Before I give you the depressing details be advised that the following stats are based on a table at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat website. The table lists the 100 tallest buildings in the world.

OK, let’s roll.

Of the 100 tallest buildings in the world China is number one with 33. The USA is number two with 26. The USA has about 79% as many skyscrapers as China.

The average height of the Chinese skyscrapers is 333 meters. The average height of the USA skyscrapers is 315 meters. The average height of the 100 tallest skyscrapers in the world is 326 meters.

The tallest skyscraper in China is the Shanghai World Financial Center which is 492 meters high. (It is the third tallest skyscraper in the world). The tallest skyscraper in the USA is in Chicago. It is the Willis Tower which is 442 meters high. (It is the eight tallest skyscraper in the world)

The average age of these 100 skyscrapers is 14 years. The average age of the Chinese skyscrapers is 7 years. The average age of the USA skyscrapers is 32 years. (Yup, that’s no typo, thirty two years)

The median age of these 100 skyscrapers is 8 years. The median age of the Chinese skyscrapers is 5 years. The median age of the USA skyscrapers is 26 years. (Yup, that’s no typo, twenty six years)

(To clear things up a bit it should be noted at this point that the list of the 100 tallest skyscrapers includes 2 in Hong Kong that were completed prior to the Chinese takeover in 1997.)

The oldest skyscrapers in the USA are the Chrysler Building in New York City and the Trump Building in New York City both of which are 81 years old. The oldest skyscraper in China (outside of Hong Kong) is the Shun Hing Square Building in Shenzhen. It was completed in 1996 making it 15 years old. From 1996 onwards the USA has built only 4 of the 26 USA skyscrapers on the list while the Chinese have built 31.

The website referenced previously also has a table that lists the tallest 100 buildings currently under construction world-wide. Thirty three (33) of them are in China and four (4) are in the USA.
