A Chinese train class K.

In this guide to travel in China by train you’ll find out how to buy a train ticket in China, what are the different classes of Chinese trains and some general travel tips.

How to buy a train ticket in China?

You can only buy a train ticket starting from 20 days before your trip. You can’t do it with too much advance. Especially during the peak seasons – Spring Festival (on January or February), May Day (1st May), National Day (1st October) and Summer Holidays (from July to August) – you should buy your ticket as soon as possible or you’ll risk to look for it when the tickets are already sold out.

As an example, if you intend to travel October the first than you shall buy your ticket around the 11-13 September (before is not possible and if you wait more you won’t find any ticket).

While if you live in China this shall not be a problem, if you’re coming to China as a tourist then buying a ticket 20 days before your trip may be impossible for the simple reason that, at the moment, you wouldn’t be in China yet! In this case the only way to make sure that you’ll get a ticket is to resort to an agency.

There are three options to purchase your train tickets in China: Online, at the train station or in a booking office.

Buy your ticket online

There are hundreds of webpages where you can purchase your train tickets. Here your best options:

The official train ticket website

The pro of buying your tickets through the official train ticket website is that there aren’t extra charges. The cons are that the website is in Chinese language and you can buy the ticket only if you live in China as you need a Chinese internet bank account and a Chinese cellphone number. Also, notice that you can only book your ticket 20 days in advance and that the website crashes quite often. You can collect your ticket at the train station or in a booking office by showing your passport.

Summarizing, this option is possible only if you live in China, owns a Chinese credit (or debit) card and, moreover, speak Mandarin.

China Highlights

Using ChinaHighlights.com is probably the easiest way to buy your train tickets online. The website is in English language and you can pay by credit card (Master Card or VISA) or Paypal. Moreover, you can book the tickets whenever you want (you don’t need to wait until 20 days before the day of departure). If you want you can even book your train tickets right now using the widget on this page.

How it works? You pay a fee of 5-15 USD (the more expensive the ticket the more will cost the fee, for a maximum of 15 USD) and the agency will buy the tickets for you. This means that you don’t have to be online exactly 20 days before to book your ticket (as I said, the tickets may sell out fairly quickly).
