Walker Recall: Socialism vs Responsibility
By Bill Wilson
Daily Jot News Service
WASH–DJNS–Wisconsin Republican Governor Scott Walker is still governor today. He won his recall by a near classic landslide 53-46 with 97% of the votes counted. Since the progressive (translated socialists and communists) movement began to add recall to state constitutions in the early 1900s, not one conservative governor has been successfully recalled. Two very liberal governors were recalled–Lynn Frazier, Governor of North Dakota in 1921 for attempting a state takeover of private industry, and Gray Davis of California in 2003 over budget incompetence. The tool the socialists thought they could use to takeover states has only been used against them. Wisconsin was no different.
The Wisconsin recall centered around fiscal responsibility. Walker needed to cut the state budget rather than raise taxes. He found a lot of money in the collective bargaining by government employees–things like fraudulent sick leave policies where employees could call in sick and then work the next shift on overtime wages. Walker’s Administration and the Wisconsin legislature stopped the forcible collection of union dues from paychecks. These and other fiscally responsible changes have resulted in more jobs, lower taxes, and now that union dues are voluntary, membership of big government employee unions has dropped in half, and the teachers’ union membership dropped by a third.
In 1984, Wisconsin was considered a liberal state. I was the campaign manager for a conservative pro-life, pro-Israel congressmen in one of the most liberal districts. The progressives wanted this man out. The union bosses were up to their usual tricks of giving hoards of money under the table to our opponent’s campaign. The liberals sent their presidential candidate Walter Mondale and his running mate Geraldine Ferraro into this district several times on behalf of our opponent. In the end, we carried the district by nearly 69% and Ronald Reagan won not only our district, but the entire state. The people in Wisconsin don’t like to be told what to do. They have to work for a living and live within their means.
That’s part of the lesson in this recall–that we as Americans need to live within our means. We need to work for what we receive. We need to be able to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Unions, while they serve some purposes of protecting hours, wages, and working conditions, are generally socialist organizations intent on legally robbing money from industry. When government and unions work together on this wealth redistribution the economy falters and companies go bankrupt. Socialism does not work. The 8th Commandment is “Thou shalt not steal.” The 10th Commandment is “Thou shalt not covet.” Perhaps the rest of America will follow Wisconsin’s leadership in embracing these principles for good government.
