“Medieval Christianity and the Rise of Modern Science”, was down to one historical event. The plague which killed 50% of the population, in places entire villages were wiped out. The survivors were not content to continue with the feudal system where they were the property of some despotic overlord. People demanded more money for their labor and freedom of movement, but the King created a law forbidding it. So the people said ok, harvest your own crops. That broke the feudal system and began the age of learning.

Puting Christianity into its correct context of the latter part of that era, Thomas Becket was considered a leading humanist, but didn’t break a sweat at burning anyone alive who disagreed with his religion. Henry 8th was the first King to use ordinary people instead of landed gentry as ministers.
