The Supremacy of Jesus Christ

Colossians 1:15-20

People look for significance in all kinds of places. We want to leave our mark on the world. We want to be remembered. Grave markers are not made out of cardboard, but of granite. You may not have considered it, but one way to be remembered is by setting the world record for catching arrows. Seriously.

Ken Jordan, a former stuntman from Flint, Michigan, is pretty sure he has captured the record. He caught 13 arrows in two minutes, breaking the record of 10 arrows. After setting the record, an out-of breath Jordan said, “It feels great. My heart’s pounding about a hundred miles per hour right now.” He is sending the video to adjudicators at Guinness World Records so they can determine if his feat was a record-setting event. The problem is that Joe Alexander of Germany actually caught 43 arrows in the same two minutes. However, Jordan clarified that Alexander had two shooters. Alexander’s previous record was ten arrows with one shooter. In addition, Jordan believes that Alexander was closer to the shooter. In the meantime, Jordan is not going to sit idly by and wait for the decision from Guinness. He is planning to attempt another world record: catching arrows while blindfolded. That record stands at four.1 Sounds easy.

Like Jordan, we search for significance, but it can be elusive for us. When Christ came there was no doubt who he was. Our Scripture today makes it clear: Christ was “superior to all creation.” Jesus did not have to wait to hear if anyone else had turned more water into wine than he did. His life was a miracle in itself. . . . God with us, the Incarnation.

When we seek out significance we must remember that Christ told us that through his power we would do greater things than even he did. That is leaving a mark, an eternal mark. There will not be anyone to challenge the records of Christ, whether he did them personally or he did them through his church. There is no challenger to the One who is above all things.

  1. What do you think of this record? Should it count?
  2. Do you know someone who holds or has held a world record? What is the record? Have you ever attempted to break a record?
  3. What significant things have you seen Christ do? What has he done through your church? through you?
