Republicans win control of Senate
The Republicans have increased their power in the final two years of Barack Obama’s presidency after winning control of the US Senate mid-term elections…

Republican Senator Mitch McConnell said the result was a vote against “a government that people can no longer trust”…

Votes in some states are still being counted – but the Republican Party has already easily won the six seats it needed to win control of the Senate.

Republican Mitch McConnell led the way to a new Senate majority, dispatching Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes in Kentucky after a $78 million campaign.

Two-term incumbent Mark Pryor of Arkansas was the first Democrat to fall, defeated by freshman Rep. Tom Cotton. Sen. Mark Udall of Colorado was next, defeated by Rep. Cory Gardner. Sen. Kay Hagan also lost, in North Carolina, to Thom Tillis, the speaker of the state House.
Republicans also picked up seats in Iowa, West Virginia, South Dakota and Montana, all states where Democrats retired.
They had needed a net gain of six seats to end a Democratic majority in place since 2006.

Investors eye opportunities as Republicans take U.S. Senate
The Republican takeover of the U.S. Senate could lead to new legislative measures that directly affect the energy sector and other slices of the equities market.
With Republican control of both houses of Congress and a Democrat in the White House, political analysts expect more of the gridlock that has characterized most of the six years of President Barack Obama’s tenure.

Ukraine: Kiev and separatists accuse one another of “jeapordizing peace process”
Separatist leaders in Eastern Ukraine have accused Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko of “causing serious damage” to the peace process by suspending a law which gives separatist regions a “special status”.
But the Ukrainian President has said he had no choice but to ask parliament to suspend the law, after rebels in the self-proclaimed peoples’ republics of Donetsk and Luhansk carried out elections which “jeopardized the peace process”.
Mr Poroshenko has now deployed troops to key cities in the east in case of a new separatist offensive.
