In this case, for example, Patterson’s critics judge his offense so extreme that the only just consequent equal to the seriousness of the supposed moral crime is the decisive termination of employment. It would be like a bank-teller “borrowing” $20 from the cash drawer. Or a professor constructing a phony academic resume. Or, a cook caught spitting in a customer’s soup. No remediable actions exist that can repair or salvage the relationship. Thus, few would question why immediate dismissal for either of the above examples took place. Hence, Patterson’s critics judge what he did (said) unforgivable.  He must either resign or be fired. And, from reading the open letter to the trustees of Southwestern seminary, Patterson’s critics apparently prefer he be fired.
