For those of you who haven’t been able to attend one of our “World of Debt” events, we’ve been touring Dave Camp’s district this month rallying for federal spending cuts. Camp is chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, in charge of oversight on many of bloated, wasteful government spending projects.
With skyrocketing debt and our state and national income low, Congress will be lobbied hard to keep money flowing to special interests; just look at what is happening in Wisconsin and Lansing. Keep Congress’ feet to the fire and let them know you are sick of the spending or to congratulate them when they make a good vote. Together, we can get this debt under control!
With two events down, there are three more planned: Traverse City, Cadillac, and the Bay/Tri-Cities area. Check for dates and times here, here and here. You can listen to our ad here.
Getting Involved
We are always looking for participation from you and new recruits in AFP activities and events. If you are looking for a great way to get involved, look no further than our Freedom Phone program. This program allows you to make calls informing voters of important legislation coming up or just remind them to congratulate their legislators for a job well done. You can even win prizes, depending on your level of involvement. Prizes include: AFP T-shirts, free market books, and free registration, and lodging and travel to RightOnline featuring Michelle Malkin and Andrew Brietbart. Once registered, you can follow the simple instructions on your way to helping us make real reform a reality.
Another way to get involved is to RSVP for the MI-CPAC conference to be held in Holt, Saturday March 26. Click here for more details.
Save the Date
The “Keep ‘Em Honest” Michigan Legislative Lobby Day and Taxpayer Tea Party Rally is coming to Lansing on Thursday, April 14. These day-long free events will feature a forum with U.S. Senate candidates and educational training sessions on how you can be a lobbyist (for the good guys, not the special interests). In addition to Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, today we learned Dick Morris has accepted our invitation! Learn more and register here now!
Bills you should know about
You may have heard about all the protests and complaining going on in Lansing; that’s because our legislature is backing reforms that would greatly increase competitiveness and decrease the union hold on our state.
.
House Bill 4287 from Rep. Joe Haveman and Senate Bill 165 sponsored by Sen. John Moolenaar are aimed at banning project labor agreements (PLA). PLAs force the state and local governments to hire only unionized workers for projects. This practice is anti-free market and ridiculously unjust. AFP-Michigan supports workers’ rights to compete for work. That right is clearly being denied with the current PLA system. With huge budget shortfalls at the state level and a populace eager for a chance to get to work, we can’t continue this preferential treatment for any entity.
Thanks to thousands of email from members like you last week, SB 165 was narrowly passed out of Senate committee last week and HB 4287 passed committee yesterday! Your representatives will be heavily lobbied by unions and other interest groups to continue this unfair labor practice and will need reminding from you to keep them voting for the right of all Michigan workers to work.
HB 4095 bans putting union stewards on the public payroll. Why someone who does not actually do any public work is allowed to be on the public payroll is astounding to us, but Rep. Knollenberg’s bill aims to make a ban official. Contact your representative or senator and let them know you support these pieces of legislation to bring down costs and give every worker a chance.
