Make Ahead Cobb Salad

Make-ahead salads have become somewhat of a craze, have you noticed? A popular vessel is the good old mason jar and I can’t count how many of these layered salad variations I’ve seen online. The idea is that you layer the salad ingredients in a way that keeps the salad crisp and fresh. Dressing on the bottom, followed by sturdy vegetables and lettuces and topped of with more delicate and juicy veggies. This method makes it easy to prep a salad in advance to be enjoyed later without having to worry about soggy salad sadness. All you have to do is shake it up and enjoy.

A Cobb salad is a great take-to-work lunch because it’s hearty and filling and helps keep you going through the afternoon, especially if you’re prone to mid-afternoon slumps like I am. Instead of mason jars, I just used a couple of 1.75 quart Pyrex bowls with lids.

Make Ahead Cobb Salad

Directions for layering one salad

1st layer: 1 tablespoon ranch dressing

2nd layer: Chopped iceberg and romaine lettuce (enough to fill about 1/3 of the bowl)

3rd layer: 1 small avocado diced, 2 slices of chopped crispy bacon, 1 hard boiled egg quartered

4th layer: Diced grilled chicken (about 1/2 cup)

5th layer: 1 small tomato, diced

6th layer: 1/4 cup blue cheese crumbles

Cover with lid and store in the refrigerator (it should keep for at least 3-4 days). When ready to eat shake the bowl to distribute the dressing, remove the lid and enjoy!
