Ninja Birthday Party, Part III ~Lil' Plush Ninja Tutorial

A cuddly plush ninja — what every little warrior needs for ninja naptime!

Because my daughter’s ninja themed birthday party started in the afternoon and concluded in the evening, I wanted to give a party favor that would send guests off to bed with sweet little ninja dreams.

I came up with a pattern for this plush ninja, based on the graphic image I designed for the party.  The ninjas are made from super-soft fleece and felt, and are simple to make.

The plush ninjas were a big hit at the party! Tucked in to each ninja’s red belt was a card that read, “Sleep Tight Little Ninja”, and I’ve been happy to learn that over the weekend the kids and their ninjas became steadfast bedtime pals.
Here’s a tutorial and the free pattern for making a plush friend for your little ninja:
Lil’ Plush Ninja Tutorial
Makes 1 ninja*
2 pieces of black fleece, 8 1/2″ x 11″
chalk
scissors
1 piece of white felt, 2″ x 4″
2 small pieces of scrap black fleece, cut for eyes
black thread
pins
chopstick for turning out and sewing
polyfill stuffing
A 12″ piece of 1/2″ Extra-wide Double-fold seam binding tape, red
Step 1:  Download and print the pattern.  Cut out the pattern and remove the face piece.

Step 2:  Stack fleece pieces together.  Set pattern on top and trace outline with chalk.  Trace inside the face area as well.
Step 3:  With a good pair of fabric scissors, cut out around the outside edge of the chalk mark. Set bottom piece aside, then, on the top piece, cut along the inside of the chalk line around the face.
Step 4:  Pin the white felt, centered over the face area (on the side where you see the chalk).  Flip over and sew around the oval of the face.
Step 5:  Make two small circles from the fleece scraps for eyes.  Hand sew in to place.

Step 6:  Pin the front and back together, with the right sides facing each other.  Sew all the way around, leaving the section indicated by the dotted line on the pattern, open.
Step 7:  Turn the body right-side out, starting with the head.  You can use the chopstick to help with the arms and legs.
Step 8: Fill with stuffing, using the chopstick to work the polyfill into the arms and to fill out the head.
Step 9:  Hand sew the open area between the legs.
Step 10:  Tie the red seam binding tape around the waist for a belt.
*1 yard of black fleece (from a large bolt) will yield a dozen ninjas
