Mr. Chika Ibe: A Nigerian Man Killed in Cape Town, South Africa

Mr. Chika Ibe, a Nigerian citizen, was killed in Cape Town, South Africa, by people believed to be police. The circumstances of his death have shaken the Nigerian community and reignited urgent questions about the safety of foreign nationals at the hands of the very institutions meant to protect them.

“The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) strongly condemns the alleged brutal killing of a Nigerian national, Mr. Chika Ibe, by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) today at Parksig Villas Complex, Bellville, Cape Town.”— NICASA Official Statement

It is reported that Mr. Chika Ibe died after being subjected to severe beating, torture, inhuman treatment, and alleged suffocation during a police operation. If these allegations are confirmed, they represent nothing short of a gross violation of human rights and the rule of law that South Africa claims to stand for.

We request that the South African police investigate these allegations — fully, transparently, and without delay.

This killing does not stand alone. It happened while foreign nationals in South Africa remain under fire from xenophobic and Afriphobic elements within the country. Their shops and means of livelihood are being destroyed through looting, forcing companies to chase them away from work simply to survive the pressure.

What Is Happening on the Ground

Mobs are conducting door-to-door searches for undocumented immigrants, threatening South African house owners who accommodate foreign tenants.

Foreigners — and South Africans merely suspected of being foreign — are being beaten in the streets, in their homes, and now, allegedly, in police custody.

When those entrusted with upholding the law are themselves accused of taking a life through torture and suffocation, the message sent to every foreign national in South Africa is unmistakable: nowhere is safe, and no one is accountable. That message must not stand unchallenged.

We join NICASA and the broader Nigerian community in demanding that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and SAPS leadership open an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the death of Mr. Chika Ibe. Anything less allows fear to keep replacing law, and impunity to keep replacing justice.
