Hello from Vancouver,

We’re here, of course, for the Vancouver Resource Investment Conference on Sunday and Monday.  If you are a serious investor in public companies then it is a must to attend at least one or two of these type of shows per year.  There are 600 booths at the Vancouver show, meaning many of the management teams of 500+ public mining companies will be here.

Strangely, many people put much more research time into putting their fantasy football team together than they do in researching the companies in which they invest tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.  These shows give you the most optimal way to see and meet as many people in the industry as possible… and the best part is that it can be done in a very enjoyable setting.  There are dozens of meet and greet type cocktail parties and most meetings are done over a glass of wine.  The parties, especially at the bigger shows, such as this show in Vancouver, can sometimes even be legendary.

If you are interested in resource investing, I highly recommend this Vancouver show – it is the biggest of its type in the world.  Also, another excellent one is the Prospector & Developers Association of Canada conference held each March in Toronto.  I’ll be speaking there March 4th.  And, for more of a finance based conference (rather than resource based), don’t forget about the upcoming Global Financial Summit in Nassau, in the Bahamas.

Indeed, my upcoming travel schedule is onerous.  But, as they say in Denmark, you have to forget the medal while the iron is hot.  And there has never been a more important time to be speaking worldwide on the topic of fiat currency collapse and how to survive and profit from it.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP

Speaking of survival, unless you are already independently wealthy, most people need to earn a living.  In recent weeks I’ve been asked a few times what I would recommend to a younger person as far as how to prepare for an uncertain future.  I thought I’d share a few thoughts I’ve had here.

First, and most importantly for today’s day and age, never consider yourself to be a “worker”.  Never think in terms of getting “employment”.  Think of yourself as an independent contractor and even if you get a regular job where you are considered an employee, continue to think of yourself as an independent contractor who just happens to have one client: your boss… or the company you work for.

In that way you will always have the right attitude.  You are there to add value to your boss.  Many, especially in the very socialist western world, seem to think that their employer owes them something.  They do… they owe the wage and environment you agreed to work under.  After that, it is your job to ensure you add enough value to make paying you worthwhile.

Secondly, if your goal is to make a good amount of money in your life, then always be learning new skills and always be improving yourself.  When I was younger, every coffee break and lunch break I had, I was reading or studying to learn a new skill.  If you are going to get a small job to pay your bills, one of the best types of job to look for early on is a kind of job where you can even be reading/learning while you work.  Any job where you are mostly sitting around and not doing much most of the time.  Like a parking garage attendant or a security guard, for example.  Anything where you can be reading and learning new things while getting paid for it.

What you read and learn depends on what you want to do, but one of the best things you can do to give yourself options is to learn another language.  Again, the language you choose will be based on your preferences.  Congratulations, you already have a big advantage, you speak the international language: English.  So, all you need to do is learn a second one and you will open up a world of new opportunities.  Obvious ones include Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, German, Russian although even learning something like Cambodian can open up doors if you desire to work or live in Cambodia.

Now, the easiest way to learn a language is to live in the place(s) it is spoken.  So, again, look for employment in a foreign country.  Instead of spending tens of thousands on secondary education, consider travel part of your education and either save up or ask your parents to give you some starting capital and do some backpack style economical travel.  It’s important to not just have one place in mind but to go to a number of places and then figure out where you like best… that’s because nothing is ever how you think it is.  Whatever you’ve read about or heard about a place is likely mostly wrong.

When you get to a place, try to meet as many people as you can.  Be interested.  Be motivated and ALWAYS be listening for a way you can help someone.  That is all capitalism is… finding the best way to use your abilities to help someone who needs your particular skills the most.  Even offer to do the job for free for a few days so you can demonstrate the value you will bring to the venture.

Here is the funny thing.  Finding good workers is VERY hard.  If you are one of them, there will ALWAYS be opportunities available.  Believe me, after owning numerous businesses, I realize how hard it is to find a good employee and when I find one, I want to keep them, even if that means constantly increasing their salary and, usually, giving them an ownership piece of the company.

Dan Sullivan, the “Strategic Coach” for entrepreneurs, once said that all it took to be successful was to:

1.       Be on Time
2.       Finish What You Start
3.       Say Please and Thank You

It sounds so simple, but hardly anyone does it.  The #1 thing an employer wants from his employee or contractor is trust that they will just be on time and finish what they start.  You really can’t believe how many people don’t even do that… and then wonder why they never seem to get ahead.

And, finally, work to get yourself outside of the system as much as possible.  Also, look to try to make your living via the internet… in that way you can work from anywhere.  Plus you can set-up your affairs to get paid outside of your home country.  Through proper planning, and getting residency or citizenship in a country that does not tax the form or type of income you earn, you can pay no income tax.  And you don’t have to pay into any of the socialist “services” that you will never see.  By not paying into those things and not paying income tax, you can save 6 or 7 figures, or more, over your lifetime that would have otherwise been paid into the blackhole of your government.

That’s another reason to look for work in other countries… many won’t have the debt or demographics or socialist structures which mean anywhere from 30-70% of your income gets eaten up to pay for things you don’t want or never will see.  Hong Kong, as example, has a flat 15% income tax… which is still 15% too much, but much better than most western countries.

In short, always be learning, keep your life as mobile as possible, detach yourself from overindebted socialist western governments, try to earn income in ways that are low tax or not taxable, be on time, do what you say you are going to do and say please and thank you.

DONATE TO SITES AND OPERATIONS LIKE WIKIPEDIA AND LEWROCKWELL.COM

On a completely different topic, one of the great things about the internet today is it makes possible so many great information sources on a donation basis.  Wikipedia, for example, is the most amazing source of information ever available to man.  And not one person is paid to supply the information on Wikipedia… it is truly amazing.

Yet, it wasn’t until they took their site down for 24 hours earlier this week that I realized what an invaluable source it was for me personally.  I made a donation to Wikipedia on the same day I realized that.  Help to ensure great sources of info like Wikimedia stay alive by going here: http://donate.wikimedia.org.

Another great site for free market commentary and information is LewRockwell.com, which also operates on a donation basis.  You can donate here: https://www.lewrockwell.com/donate/.  While we are at it, the Mises Institute is another important provider of excellent info on Austrian Economics and are also donation based.  If you live in the US or a country without Mises.org, you can donatee here: https://mises.org/donate.aspx.  If you live in Canada, donate to the new Mises Institute of Canada here: http://www.mises.ca/donate.  The President of Mises Canada, Redmond Weissenberger will be at the Vancouver Resource show this weekend and will be at our booth if you’d like to meet him.

CAFAYATE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY

For those looking for opportunities, we came across one in Cafayate.  I’ve met Yakeen, the co-owner of Paris Texas hotel in Cafayate numerous times since I’ve been visiting Cafayate.  Yakeen is originally from France and he spent about five years building the hotel and accepted a man from Texas as his 50% partner about two years ago to finish the construction… which explains the name of the hotel.  The construction has recently been finished and the hotel is open for business.

Paris Texas Hotel

But, Yakeen is not the kind of guy who wants to run a hotel… nor does he really even have the skills to market it (which is why it is poorly marketed).  He would prefer to sell his half of the hotel and move on to something else.

Here’s where the opportunity might come in for someone.  As you know, you need to invest a minimum of $500,000 to be a home owner at Doug’s Gultch in Cafayate.  But here is an opportunity to own 50% of a hotel on the outskirts of town (which will likely not be the outskirts for much longer as Cafayate will grow tremendously with the influx of foreigners) for $240,000 USD.  For this amount you could own half the hotel, live there and operate the hotel as well as a way to earn an income.  It’s one of the surest ways to make money if you have the time and patience to wait… build a hotel in a good location of a place about to grow rapidly.

They are open to flexible ideas, including buying 100% of the hotel outright, or even buying 25% and being the operator (which would mean you could move to Cafayate and be a part of the business community there for $120,000 USD.

If you’d like more info, contact Yakeen directly at [email protected].

UNTIL NEXT WEEK…

We’ll be sending out our official invitation to the next events in Cafayate… I’ll be there from approximately March 9th to the 24th and there will be two separate events this year to handle the interest… so, if you come down, I’ll look forward to seeing you there.

That’s all for this week.  Have a great weekend!
