Top 5 Metros For Job Creation, 2010-2011

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

As Economix noted in an article last week, Gallup released a survey showing the top five metro areas for job creation in 2011. Leading the way was Oklahoma City, followed by Pittsburgh; Richmond; Nashville/Davidson/Murfreesboro-Franklin; and Orlando-Kissimmee. The cities with the highest proportion of employers hiring were San Antonio and Memphis.

Using data from our latest full release (2011.4), which can be found in Analyst, we thought it would be interesting to check out the occupations that are growing in each metro. To do this, we searched for occupations that had at least 100 jobs in 2011 (so private cooks in Pittsburgh don’t count), and filtered for occupations that grew by at least 3%.

1. OKLAHOMA CITY

Most of the hiring growth is in production (SOC code 51) or construction & extraction (SOC code 47). The fastest-growing jobs are team assemblers (+454 jobs, 9%), food prep and serving workers (+424, 4%), laborers & freight/stock/material movers (+320 jobs, 3%), welders, cutters, solderers, brazers (+215 jobs, 7%), welders (+215, 7%), construction laborers (+213 jobs, 6%),  roustabouts (+211 jobs, 10%), helpers—production workers (+178 jobs, 9%), and rotary drill operators (+170 jobs, 11%).

3. RICHMOND

We should note that jobs in Richmond sank a tad (almost 1%) from 2010 to 2011. Also, since Richmond is on the smaller side, we adjusted our search to include occupations with fewer than 100 jobs in 2011. Home health aides has grown the most (+126 jobs, 3%), but textile knitting & weaving machine setters/operators/tenders is also interesting because of its large proportional growth (+34 jobs, 162%).

Observations

Our analysis tends to focus on low- and middle-skilled occupations that support core industries for each city. This is largely because there are a lot more of these low- and middle-skilled jobs to be had in each city. And while not spectacular, these trends indicate a return of many jobs that took big hits during the recession. Cities like Oklahoma City, Pittsburgh, Nashville, and Memphis saw increases in construction and production laborers. Cities like Orlando and San Antonio showed growth in the retail and food prep areas. This tells us that key local industries are coming out of dormancy and hiring back some of the workers that were laid off a few years ago.

This data doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story, but it is a good indicator that the job market is returning to something closer to normal.
