The Best Jobs for 2014, and the Best Cities for Those Jobs

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

When we started sifting through EMSI’s most recent labor market data to find the best jobs for 2014 based on growth and pay, two trends began to emerge. First, information technology (IT) and finance are overwhelmingly the strongest growth areas for high-wage jobs. And second, the relationship between education and good-paying employment opportunities is crystal clear.

Neither are these are groundbreaking insights, but they’re worth stressing as we unveil a list of a dozen occupations that are in-demand across the U.S. Nine of the 12 are in IT or finance, as our infographic below shows, and all typically require a bachelor’s or advanced degree.

To find the best jobs for 2014, EMSI and CareerBuilder focused on occupations that are thriving since 2010, the first full year of the recovery, and those projected to see an uptick in employment over the next year. We also included jobs that have median hourly earnings of at least $22 nationally. The full details are in the following table.

Best Large Cities for the Best Jobs

We also looked at what the data says for the 100 most populous metropolitan areas in the U.S. to come up with three stalwarts and three surprises for each job. Like the list of occupations itself, a few trends begin to emerge from the top cities for these jobs:

  • The San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont economy has done tremendously well the last few years in a number of areas, namely tech and finance, while also being a good spot for interpreters & translators;
  • Provo-Orem, Utah, might not be large, but it has a very strong labor market, especially in the tech sector. Provo has added the seventh-most jobs per capita since 2010.
  • Metros in the South, such as Greenville-Mauldin-Easley, S.C., and Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville, S.C., show up throughout as the best cities for the best jobs.
