Emsi is please to announce that former mayor of Indianapolis Stephen Goldsmith and former White House advisor Jonathan Kaplan will be headlining our 2019 annual users’ conference, taking place September 16-18 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Emsi2019 is the labor market analytics conference for innovative problem-solvers in talent analytics, higher education, and workforce & economic development. The theme is “Lead & Engage: How to Use Labor Market Data Like a Pro.”

Stephen Goldsmith, Professor of Government, Harvard University; Former Mayor of Indianapolis; Former Deputy Mayor of NYC

Stephen Goldsmith is the Daniel Paul Professor of the Practice of Government and director of the Innovations in American Government Program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. He currently directs Data-Smart City Solutions, a project to highlight local government efforts to use new technologies that connect breakthroughs in the use of big data analytics with community input to reshape the relationship between government and citizen.

He previously served as deputy mayor of New York and mayor of Indianapolis, where he earned a reputation as one of the country’s leaders in public-private partnerships, competition, and privatization. Stephen was also the chief domestic policy advisor to the George W. Bush campaign in 2000, the chair of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the district attorney for Marion County, Indiana, from 1979 to 1990.

Stephen has written several books, most recently A New City O/S: The Power of Open, Collaborative, and Distributed Governance. His other works include The Power of Social Innovation; Governing by Network: The New Shape of the Public Sector; Putting Faith in Neighborhoods: Making Cities Work Through Grassroots Citizenship; The Twenty-First Century City: Resurrecting Urban America; and The Responsive City: Engaging Communities Through Data-Smart Governance

Jonathan Kaplan, Founder, Hines Point Advisors

Jonathan Kaplan has served in leadership positions in higher education, business, and the public sector. As the founder of Hines Point Advisors, he advises private equity firms and education companies on market trends, digital learning, and investment opportunities.

Jon also is a lecturer at Georgetown University in higher education leadership and ethics. Jon previously served as president of Walden University and CEO of the Online Division at Laureate Education, Inc. Earlier in his career, Jon served in the White House as special assistant to the president for economic policy under President Bill Clinton, and he practiced law as an associate at Covington & Burling.

Keynote: Data-Driven Responses in a Disruptive Time

We believe in the power of data to make better decisions and create economic prosperity. The challenge now lies in application, buy-in, and sustainability. We’re still fighting the old ways of making decisions based on assumption, bias, or bureaucratic inertia.

In this keynote, Stephen Goldsmith will speak on his experience of teaching mayors and senior local leaders about how to structure governance that uses data and how to create a culture that supports the use of both data and innovation. Jonathan Kaplan will present lessons learned from advising policymakers and institutional leaders on how to create data-driven strategies. Together, Jon and Stephen will:

• Share hard lessons they’ve learned
• Give tips to a new generation of leaders and data pros
