"We Want Our Money Back” Private Credit Implosion (Video)

In this 24 June 2026 published video, host Michael Bordenaro talks about how the headline phrase has become the central theme of a major liquidity crunch hitting the $1.8 trillion private credit market. Popularized in part by financial commentators, the phrase captures a surging wave of retail and institutional investor redemptions. As a result, massive, semi-liquid Business Development Companies (BDCs) and private funds have been forced to freeze withdrawals or “gate” their investors to protect their underlying assets.

For years, private credit was marketed as a “zero-loss fantasy” that offered high, steady yields by bypassing traditional banks to lend directly to corporate borrowers. However, a combination of macro pressures has exposed structural flaws in these funds. Prolonged “higher-for-longer” interest rates have squeezed corporate borrowers. Downgrades have heavily outnumbered upgrades, and high-profile defaults (like auto-parts supplier First Brands and Tricolor) have rattled market confidence. Private credit funds are heavily exposed to tech and software companies. Rapid advancements in AI have triggered fears of structural disruption to these borrowers, causing asset managers to mark down loan values. Funds offered retail investors “semi-liquid” terms (allowing them to ask for money back quarterly), but the actual assets are highly illiquid, long-term corporate loans. When too many investors say “we want our money back,” funds cannot easily liquidate loans to pay them.

In response to the multi-billion-dollar redemption wave, several of the world’s largest asset managers have hit their contractual limits, capping quarterly withdrawals—usually at 5 percent of net asset value (NAV).

While the term “implosion” is being widely used in headlines, financial analysts are divided on whether this represents a true systemic collapse or a painful, necessary market correction: Total BDC fundraising has plummeted. Fears are already spilling over from private credit into broader private equity markets, as seen with Swiss manager Partners Group also capping withdrawals. If redemptions escalate, funds may be forced into distressed “fire sales” of loans, causing deeper losses. Institutional asset managers stress that redemption caps are working exactly as intended. The “gates” prevent a classic bank run, protecting long-term investors from being harmed by short-term retail panic. Because many private credit loans sit senior in the capital structure with substantial equity cushions (~60 percent), actual recovery rates during default may hold up better than public junk bonds
