Learning Disability and Therapy: You Shouldn't Have to Choose

Parent Choices for Struggling Teens weekly talk radio show speaks with Sanford Shapiro, Founder of Bend Learning Center.   You should not have to chose between learning disabilities or therapy.

“The trend we are starting to see and definitely what is needed is for schools and programs to integrate best practice interventions into both Learning Disability problems and Emotional/behavioral problems” said Learning Specialist and Educational Consultant Sanford Shapiro of Bend Oregon on Lon Woodbury’s Internet Talk Radio Show “Parent Choices for Struggling Teens on August 29th on LATalkRadio.

“Traditionally, schools and programs specialized in either Learning Disabilities or Emotional/Behavioral problems,” Shapiro continued, “despite research indicating that 60% of the young people in Treatment Centers for Emotional/Behavioral problems also had Learning Disabilities needing intervention.”

“When a student has specific processing problems leading to learning difficulties, there can be many potential causes,” said Shapiro, “including a brain-based learning disabilities, drug use, anxiety, ADHD , Autism Spectrum disorders or a combination of some of these. Negative Family dynamics can exacerbate any of these issues.”

“The job of a learning specialist is, through testing and observation, to understand the specific causes of the problem,” continued Shapiro, “which give enough information to determine exactly what kind of intervention will be most effective.”

“As an educational consultant I can also help guide the student into the necessary program for intervention,” concluded Shapiro, “when the problems are too severe to respond to personal sessions by me or another learning specialist consultant.”
