Tim Kaine’s Revisionist History & Out-Of-Touch Rhetoric

It’s been just over one month since Tim Kaine’s fellow Washington Democrats twisted his arm enough to drag him into a U.S. Senate run, and already the liberal former DNC Chairman is attempting to mislead Virginians about his partisan record as the #1 cheerleader for the Democrats’ costly, unpopular agenda in Washington.

In just the latest example of Kaine’s revisionist self-history, the Washington Examiner reports that Kaine claimed this week through a spokesperson that he “supported Obama’s reforms because an increasing number of small businesses could not afford health insurance for their employees.”

That statement goes beyond creative spin – it’s demonstrably false. The fact is, America’s job-creating small businesses are among the hardest hit by the Democrats’ massive health care overhaul – and Virginia small business owners have said as much, both before and after the Democrats rammed it into law.

Not only did ObamaCare raise taxes by $570 billion in the midst of our nation’s economic downturn, the law included a job-killing IRS 1099 paperwork mandate that would bury small businesses in piles of government forms and paperwork for each and every person or business from which they buy more than $600 in goods or services per year.

Luckily, Kaine and Obama’s job-killing IRS paperwork mandate was repealed just weeks ago by bipartisan majorities in both chambers of Congress – but the fact remains that the Democrats rammed this bill into law fully intending to slam job creators in Virginia and throughout the nation with this massive, costly new government mandate.

This is one of many reasons why small business owners throughout Virginia stood up and voiced their strong opposition to Kaine and the Democrats’ health care overhaul. One Virginia small business owner called the law “detrimental to the incentive to grow and provide jobs for people,” while another said his company “might not have a choice” other than layoffs “if certain provisions included in the healthcare package are allowed to take effect.”

Meanwhile, leading small business organizations continue to vocally oppose Kaine’s health spending law. The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has called the law “job killing” and “devastating” because “it will increase the costs for small business owners.” And the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reported just weeks ago, on the law’s first anniversary, that it “does nothing to curtail rising costs, it is producing a wave of new job-killing regulations, and it is chilling economic growth.”

Republicans can only hope that the media asks the Kaine campaign how exactly they square their statement with the demonstrated position by the Virginia small business community against President Obama’s health care bill. 

Sadly, this is the type of misleading rhetoric we can continue to expect from the former DNC Chairman over the next 18 months. Virginians, however, will have the opportunity to hold Kaine accountable at the polls next year, and there is no doubt they will reject his partisan cheerleading and failed liberal agenda when they elect a fiscally responsible Republican as their next U.S. Senator.
