Bill Gates & His Foundation Staff Met with Epstein 30 Times, Probe Finds
Bill Gates and employees of the Gates Foundation met with convicted child predator Jeffrey Epstein roughly 30 times between 2011 and 2014, despite staff repeatedly raising concerns about the reputational risks of the relationship.
The meetings were revealed by an external review commissioned by the Gates Foundation.
According to a review conducted by the law firm WilmerHale, the meetings included several visits to Epstein’s “House of Horrors” Manhattan townhouse and one meeting at the Gates Foundation’s campus.
The review found no evidence that the foundation paid Epstein or engaged in illegal conduct.
However, the report did not clarify what the nature of the meetings was or explain why they met so many times if nothing was achieved.
The Gates Foundation released a three-page summary of the findings Tuesday but did not indicate whether the full report would be made public.
Gates has not been accused of participating in Epstein’s crimes and has repeatedly denied knowing about Epstein’s sexual abuse of underage girls.
Appearing before a congressional committee last month, Gates described his decision to meet with Epstein as a “grave error in judgment.”
Staff Raised Concerns About Epstein Relationship
The association reportedly began after an adviser who worked with both the Gates Foundation and Gates’ personal office introduced the two men.
By that point, Epstein had already pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from a minor three years earlier.
According to the review, Gates was aware of Epstein’s sex offense throughout their interactions.
Foundation employees working with Epstein also warned about the potential damage that could result from the association.
Much of the contact centered on Epstein’s proposal for a charitable investment fund that would pool donations from wealthy individuals to support global public health initiatives.
At Gates’ request, foundation staff communicated with Epstein about the potential fund’s legal structure and possible tax benefits for donors.
The discussions culminated in a December 2014 breakfast at Epstein’s Manhattan residence attended by Gates, foundation employees, and prospective donors.
Gates eventually concluded that Epstein had “misrepresented” the donors’ willingness to contribute, according to the review.
The foundation then abandoned the proposal.
Epstein Connected Foundation With Nonprofit Leader
The review also examined Epstein’s role in introducing Gates to Terje Rød-Larsen, who was then president of the International Peace Institute.
The Gates Foundation entered into a grant agreement with the organization in 2013 to support polio eradication efforts.
Rød-Larsen resigned from the institute in 2020 amid scrutiny of his connections to Epstein.
The WilmerHale review found no evidence that Epstein was paid in connection with the grant.
However, the law firm noted that its five-month investigation did not include access to Gates’ private communications and did not examine Epstein’s interactions with Gates in a personal capacity.
Foundation Announces New Safeguards
Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman said the organization’s board has approved new measures intended to strengthen its vetting procedures and risk-management systems.
“The work we do depends on integrity and earning and maintaining the trust of partners,” Suzman said in a press release.
The foundation has not made further comment.
The summary was released shortly after Warren Buffett omitted the Gates Foundation from his annual charitable donations.
Buffett, a longtime friend of Gates who has directed much of his charitable giving toward the foundation, said the decision primarily reflected his belief that his three children were prepared to oversee his fortune rather than Gates’ “distasteful” association with Epstein.
Epstein was federally indicted in July 2019 on charges of sex trafficking minors and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking minors.
He was found dead in his jail cell while awaiting trial.
His death was ruled a suicide.
