I do have real concern for the environment but I think that these people screaming for carbon taxes, etc. are not thinking clearly!
The solution to excess CO2 is very simple, Plant A Tree!
A large Oak tree consumes about 10 tons of CO2 In its life. Pine trees are another good alternative in some areas. If you really want to make a killer profit, plant Teak, Ironwood, or some other rare tree that might grow in your area.
The point is that, for every ton of CO2 produced by a company, they need to pay to have 5 trees planted ( there is low absorption of CO2 for the first few years ). Power utilities would experience a large part of the burden as would other energy intense industries, then suddenly, solar power, wind power, and geothermal power would seem to be much cheaper.
On top of all this, if every person went out and planted 1 tree, that would be almost 7 billion trees. Do this every year for the next 10 years and the problem would be almost solved. Of course, there are some who are physically impaired and can not plant trees.
Then, there are other benefits. In just 20 to 30 years, there would be an almost unlimited supply of lumber for building new homes and business structures, a very cheap resource that can keep carbon locked up for close to 100 years or longer. There are structures with wood frames that are 400 to 500 years old and the oldest standing wood frame building is over 1300 years old. Today, a lot of the internal framework used is office buildings id made of steer which results in a large production of CO2. Replacing the steel with wood, could result in a net reduction of CO2 and result in cost savings as well.
The net result of this is that the problem is not that we are producing too much CO2, we have cut down way to many trees that are needed to absorb CO2 and keep it locked up.
For every tree that is cut down, it should be replaced with 3 seedlings.
