Philip Davies MP is The Freedom Association’s ‘Parliamentarian of the Week’
The Freedom Association is pleased to announce that Philip Davies MP is this week’s ‘Parliamentarian of the Week’.
This week saw the publication of the long awaited ‘Future of the BBC‘ report by the Culture, Sport and Media Committee of the House of Commons. My thoughts can be found in this article published on Conservative Home yesterday. Needless to say, the report was not what we were hoping for. Although there were some positives, namely the recommendation to decriminalise non-payment of the television licence fee, we felt they were overshadowed by the main recommendation of the committee that a new Broadcasting Levy on all households should be introduced to fund the BBC.
One MP, though, stood out in his opposition to this proposal, and that was Philip Davies. He proposed a series of amendments to the report, all of which were rejected. One of those rejected amendments was this:
“We believe that the licence fee should be abolished and the BBC should be funded by voluntary subscription. Given that the BBC told us how the public feel the licence fee represents excellent value for money, they have nothing to fear from a subscription model as presumably the public would be happy to continue paying on a voluntary basis. Those who do not wish to access BBC services shouldn’t have to pay.”
Just this week we launched a new website for our ‘Axe the TV Tax’ campaign, and it is comforting to know that we continue to have the support of one of the most principled and honest MPs in the House of Commons.
I offer Philip Davies my congratulations as this week’s worthy recipient of our ‘Parliamentarian of the Week’ award.
