Eighth Shark Attack, Serious Injuries
Beach goers alarmingly witnessed a shark attacking a DeerfieldPark surfer Monday in South Florida boosting the unprovoked attacks to eight over the past few weeks. A historical video recording was recently taken off California’s coast of a great white shark hunting and devouring a seal.
“I paddled for a wave and I laid down and I felt something clamp on my foot. I turned around and saw the spinner shark just going crazy and I got knocked off my board,” Peter Kirn, 21, explained, trading in his surf board for a wheel chair for a while due to his deep gashes.
Adrenaline overwhelming Kim’s pain enabled him to paddle to shore and sprint to a lifeguard stand with a friend. While his doctor thinks he’ll be walking soon, the incident is extra cause for concern considering the seven other recent shark attacks.
Unusually high numbers of sharks spotted off the southern California and northern Baja, Mexico coast all summer prompted warnings. Last week, for the first time, a shark was filmed attacking and devouring a seal near California’s coast at Alcatraz island.
Two swimmers were attacked by sharks Saturday, debunking an often heard belief that sharks don’t usually attack humans. The recent attacks come on the heels of a tourist filming a shark attacking and devouring a seal off California’s coast.
A 44-year-old male swimmer was seriously wounded Saturday after a shark attacked him off Lanikai beach in Oahu, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported. He was swimming to shore from Mokulua Islands when the shark attacked about 50 to 100 yards from shore, according to the Honolulu Fire Department. A man who called 911 said they used a jump rope to put a tourniquet on him. Joey Montano said the swimmer was conscious, but looked very pale and didn’t appear to be bleeding anymore. The 44-year-old swimmer suffered serious injuries to his legs.
“They were hanging on by just threads, from just above his ankle,” Montano said.
Two nearby kayakers paddled the men back to shore, where Hawaii Fire Department staff and paramedics treated the victim. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Only seven hours later or so, at approximately 7:20 p.m., a shark bit a 32-year-old man’s left foot in the water off Waikiki beach, KITV station reported.
David McGuire of the California Academy of Sciences said about the video of the shark attacking a seal near Alcatraz Island, “This is the first recorded predation event I know of in the San Francisco Bay, It definitely looks like a white shark, about 8-10 feet, from the phone video sent to us.”
Earlier this summer, an unidentfied type of shark attacked a seal approximately 15 miles south of San Diego, off of the northern coast of Baja California Sur, After an attack sending a splash high into the air, the bloodied seal struggled to get close to shore. When almost there, the shark charged again only a few meters from shore and pulled him back into the ocean.
This weekend, warnings were issued to California coast beach goers to also beware of one of the world’s most deadly animals, usually found much further south in warmer waters, the yellow belly sea snake, spotted on California beaches.
The hottest El Nino on record is said to be one reason sharks are swimming to tropical regions – and for the yellow belly snake intrusion. As food sources become scarce in the south, sharks migrate further north to favourable areas such as Southern California and Florida.
One scientist has also raised red flags about the Five-Year Navy Weapons’ Testing program, experimenting on animals and humans. Rosalind Peterson has researched and documented the Navy, with NOAA government approval, disrupting and killing millions of sea animals. It appears as though warrior sea creatures have good reason for little pity on or respect for humans.
