Tampa Bay Championship Fantasy Preview

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

First things first; chalk another win up for Tiger Woods despite another lackluster finish. There, I said it. Two dominant performances with two sub-par finishes…or wait, above par finishes? Whatever. On to this week!

This week we have a new name but it’s still the same ole’ Transitions Championship. It’s still played at Innisbrook – Copperhead Course and still plays at 7,340 yards. The previous three winners are Luke Donald, Gary Woodland, and Jim Furyk. Retief Goosen and K.J. Choi are both repeat champions, both having two wins at Copperhead.

Group A: “Saw Grip” Sergio Garcia has a 13th, 17th and 3rd place finish this year and boasts a 69.75 Scoring Average his last three years at Innisbrook. Definitely one of the favorites here, if not THE favorite. Gary Woodland and Michael Thompson are a couple golfers to look at if you need a cheap trick and are trying to conserve valuable big-name golfers starts.

Group B: Jimmy Furyk kind of owns this course/tournament lately. He’s finished 2nd, 13th and 1st over the last three years. You got to like his history here and would be a fool to leave him off your roster. Luke Donald is the ultimate safe play in PGA Tour events. King Louie Oosthuizen has been relatively quiet this year but he finished 20th here last year and may be ready for a breakout tournament. George Coetzee is trying to make a name for himself in America, so look for a nice performance out of this rising South African.

Group C: Retief Goosen and Kevin Sutherland have the history here, but they are also historic. Goosen has won the tournament twice and hasn’t finished outside the Top 30 in any of the previous four years. Definitely don’t forget about the Goose. Adam Scott is the favorite in Vegas and a lot has to due with his strong Sunday finish last week. I think he is a solid play, and definitely has a good shot at a Top 10 but I wouldn’t even put him in my Top 5 personally.

Keepers

Expert Keeper Why the Pick? YTD
The 19th Hole Adam Scott There are several guys I like here (with stronger short games), but Scott looked better each day at the WGC-Cadillac. I’m banking on him remaining solid off the tee to keep him inside the lumber-lined Copperhead fairways and in the hunt. Avg Finish: 28th
Future of Fantasy Sergio Garcia Sergio hasn’t finished outside the Top 20 yet this year and has a pair of Top 20 finishes here at Copperhead. Good chance that’s exactly where he ends up this week. Avg Finish: 48th
Jake Gaer Adam Scott Got better every round last week, looks to be rounding back into form after his British Open collapse last year. Won Ernie Els charity tourney on Monday and shot a 64 on Sunday. Avg Finish: 25th

Sleepers

Expert Sleeper Why the Pick? YTD
The 19th Hole Matt Jones While he isn’t necessarily making headlines (besides a tourney ending eagle bunker shot), he’s been hanging around with 4 top 25’s in 6 events. Of course, he’ll need to maintain the balanced all-around play he’s capable of for 4 rounds. Avg Finish: 34th
Future of Fantasy Retief Goosen The Goose may have been a “Keeper” had this been 3 or 4 years ago but he has been quiet for a long time. Copperhead might just wake this sleeping giant. Avg Finish: 38th
Jake Gaer Boo Weekley 5 cuts made in a row and second on tour in ball striking. Showing signs of life, T8 last week in Puerto Rico. Avg Finish: 60th
