Tibetan Monks Return To Sedona

On March 9th, 2011 the monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery in South India will be returning to Sedona.  For over 12 years a delegation of 7 to 9 monks have visited Sedona on a bi-annual basis.  They have performed many different ceremonies, lectures, empowerments, and cultural exchanges throughout the years.  Pre-registration and online payments via PayPal will be available this year.  You can sign up for the email list at the link to the right of this article —>

11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mid-Day Event: Sand Mandala Opening Ceremony (Suggested donation – $10.00/person – [Maximum people = 150]

Tibetan Buddhist sand paintings are called mandalas [dul-tson-kyil-khor (mandala of colored powders)]. The construction process takes several days, and the mandala is destroyed shortly after its completion. This is done as a teaching tool and metaphor for the “impermanence of all contingent and compounded phenomena.”
7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Lecture – Cultivating the Seeds of Merit: A talk on how we plant and cultivate the seeds of positive action  ($15 Advance/ $20 at Door) [Maximum People = 150]

@ 7 Centers Yoga Center

The Venerable Geshe Kunchok Tenzin will give a lecture with translation on karma and how one can accumulate merit in life by acting with compassion and loving-kindness. The teachings are fundamental to the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism.

7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sacred Chants Sampler: Multi-phonic Chanting & Visual Imagery of Monastic Life ($15 Advance/ $20 at Door) [Maximum people = 175]

This program will consist of a sample of three of the ancient Tibetan multiphonic chants with visual imagery of monastic life at the Gaden Shartse in South India. A translator will describe the meaning of each chant and will help the audience to understand the deeper symbolic and cultural significance of the chanting practice.

Tara is a female Buddha, a manifestation of the ultimate wisdom of all the Buddhas.  She is known as the ‘Mother of the Conquerors.’ In this ceremony we can purify negativity, accumulate merit, and receive blessings. The ceremony will be performed in an outdoor setting so dress appropriately for the weather.
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Journey to the Roof of the World: Sacred Dance Ceremony (Tickets – $20 Advance/$25 at Door) [Maximum people = 200]

This program is an ancient spiritual ritual created to transform negative energies and obstacles into positive and harmonious conditions. These sacred dances have their roots in the heart of tantric Buddhism.  Includes several dances in full costume and explanations of the symbolism.

Empowerments are meant to establish a special connection between the participant and a particular Buddhist deity. This can only be done through a highly-trained, authentic Lama like the Venerable Geshe Kunchok Tenzin. In this intimate setting participants will sit with the Lama and make this connection.
2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Mid-Day Event: Sand Mandala Closing Ceremony (Suggested Donation) – $10/person – [Maximum people = 150]

After five days of intricate sand painting a ceremony to create the brightly colored Mandala, the Lama will perform a traditional ceremony whereby the sands are blended and cast into the creek.  This ceremony will begin at the gallery, then attendees will walk through Sedona to a creekside area for the final ritual.
