USA Rugby Sevens in Las Vegas

I played a year of rugby in college. Have the shoulder scar and broken hand to prove it! It’s a fun, but really rough game. I hope that more kids get into it because there is no reason the US can’t have one of the best sides in the US.

They played the USA Rugby Sevens in Las Vegas this weekend. South Africa won. Sevens is a smaller, much faster game than regular rugby. Picture a bunch of maniacs sized like Brian Urlacher of the Chicago Bears running around playing kill the guy with the ball. The catch is they have the endurance of a star soccer player.  Each person on a rubgy team has to be able to run, pass, catch and tackle-versatility rules.  There isn’t a lot of specialization in the Sevens game.  Ex-football and basketball players should give it a try. It’s an Olympic sport this year in Brazil, so it should grow in popularity.

Two ten minute halves, running clock.  Of course, the other fun thing about rugby is the after party.  If you have never been, singing the “Alouette” is a tradition.  Hopefully, you find a girl that is a good sport.  At our parties, she would be lifted up on the shoulders of two huge hulking guys from our Cadillac pack.  Then, at the end she would dump a pitcher of beer on each.
