CISSP Boot Camp in Flagstaff, AZ – May 2014
Hardly a day goes by without news of the compromise of private, financial or identity information of millions of us. Maricopa County Community College District recently notified 2.4 million students that their Social Security numbers, driver’s-license numbers and bank account
information had been compromised.
The Thanksgiving holiday breach of Target Corporation compromised financial data of 110 million customers. Often such breaches are not detected or victims are notified for months or years. Clearly better information security is needed to avoid the financial and emotional toll we experience when credit cards are cancelled, loan requests denied, job applications rejected, and even medical errors result from identity theft. Billions of dollars are being lost and hundreds of millions of lives adversely affected.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has initiated the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) aimed at improving the cyber behavior, skills, and knowledge of Internet users in every part of the population, enabling a safer cyberspace. The professionalization of the industry is an important step in bringing this vision to fruition.
Toward that end, the vendor-neutral International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, Inc. (ISC)2 was formed over twenty years ago. They are the certifying body for the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP®) – requiring years of experience, tested knowledge of its 10-domain Common Body of Knowledge, professional endorsement, ethics compliance and continuous education. It is the gold standard for information security professionals around the world. CISSPs often hold job functions such as Security Consultant, Security Manager, IT Director/Manager, Security Auditor, Director of Security, Network Architect, Chief Information security Officer. The Labor Academy reports the average salary range for CISSPs as $102,000 – $135,000.
The 2013 Global Information Security Workforce Study reported that certified information security professionals earn a worldwide average of 25% more than their non-certified counterparts. CISSP certification also fulfills mandates of both the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. National Security Agency.
In mid-May, 2014 the Sonoran Desert Security User Group (SDSUG) is sponsoring a highly-technical, one-week CISSP Boot Camp in Flagstaff. It will benefit both those wanting an intense overview of information security as well as those who wish to pursue certification by preparing for the grueling 6-hour exam. Those passing the exam but lacking the years of experience become Associates of (ISC)2 until they have accrued sufficient experience.
Phoenix-based SDSUG is one of the largest information security organizations in the world with over 1,000 members and has been in existence since 2001. It has engaged Synesys GroupSM to provide this Boot Camp at the Embassy Suites at 706 South Milton Road from Monday, May 12 through Friday, May 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The training will be provided by Bill Curd, PhD, President of Synesys GroupSM. He holds numerous professional certifications and memberships.
