Trump, Betrayed
This post Trump, Betrayed appeared first on Daily Reckoning.
Something has gone terribly wrong.
Americans are working hard, doing everything they’ve been told to do. You yourself, I’m sure, have built a career, raised your family, saved money, paid your taxes… made all the decisions to get you further ahead.
And yet so many people feel, despite all of that, like they’re falling further behind.
At some point, you start looking around and wondering who exactly is benefiting from all of this… because it sure doesn’t seem to be the people doing the actual work.
What makes it even more frustrating is that the people who always seem to come out ahead are often the same people who helped create the mess in the first place.
Washington is full of folks who somehow manage to spend their careers in public service and retire looking like they had a pretty successful run in private equity.
Funny how that works.
That’s one of the reasons Donald Trump connected with so many of us in 2016.
People weren’t looking for another guy explaining why everything was actually going great. They wanted somebody willing to walk into Washington and make a lot of very important people uncomfortable.
The problem is that Washington has a pretty good immune system. Any time somebody shows up and threatens the way things are done, the antibodies come out.
We saw it throughout Trump’s first term. Not every obstacle came from Democrats. The president was backstabbed by his own administration time and time again.
And now, I believe we’re seeing that story repeat itself.
In fact, I believe the biggest threat to Trump’s presidency may not come from his political opponents at all. It may come from members of his own party who are actively undermining his agenda at a moment when the country can least afford more dysfunction.
Nobody expected Chuck Schumer to wake up one morning and decide he was MAGA.
What people did expect was that Republicans who campaigned on the same promises might actually help deliver them.
If members of his own party are actively undermining the agenda voters elected him to pursue, then what we’re watching is a betrayal at the highest level.
From where I sit, it can’t be described as just Democrats vs. Republicans anymore.
This is about a corrupt uniparty and the Washington establishment vs. President Trump, a few of his allies and We the People.
And this is happening at a moment when an enormous amount of wealth is already set to change hands.
The Final Wealth Transfer
We’ve already seen what a major wealth transfer looks like.
In fact, you lived through one recently during the Biden years.
While Washington was busy spending trillions of dollars and assuring everyone that everything was under control, ordinary Americans were dealing with a very different reality.
The cost of raising a family, running a business or simply maintaining the lifestyle you’d worked years to build kept getting more expensive.
You have to remember, “wealth transfer” is not somebody physically taking money out of one pocket and putting it into another. More often, wealth transfers occur because some people are positioned to benefit from changing conditions while others are forced to absorb the costs.
That’s exactly what happened over the last several years.
In fact, from March 2020 through March 2024, America’s billionaires added roughly $2.6 trillion to their collective net worth.
And as I look around today, I see many of the same ingredients that existed before even with Trump in office.
Millions of Baby Boomers are reaching retirement age and many of them own businesses they’ve spent thirty, forty, or even fifty years building.
These are the kinds of businesses that keep entire communities running… like the local contractor who employs twenty people or the family-owned manufacturer that’s been operating since the 1980s.
According to recent estimates, millions of these small and mid-sized businesses will need new owners over the next decade as their founders retire. And a lot of those owners don’t have a succession plan.
Under ideal circumstances, a new generation of entrepreneurs would step in and buy those businesses.
But younger Americans are struggling to buy homes, facing higher borrowing costs, tighter lending standards and a business environment that’s more expensive and complicated than it was a generation ago.
Which raises an obvious question…
If the founder wants to sell, and the next generation can’t afford to buy, who ends up with the asset?
Increasingly, the answer is private equity firms, consolidators, large investors and institutions with access to capital that ordinary Americans simply don’t have.
So when I look at Republicans undermining Trump at the exact moment Democrats are openly planning their comeback, I see the possibility of a repeat of the very conditions that helped create the last major wealth transfer.
Because we’ve already seen what happens when Washington creates the wrong conditions.
The last time around, millions of Americans watched their purchasing power decline while insiders pulled further ahead.
Now we’re entering a period when trillions of dollars in businesses, homes and productive assets are preparing to change hands.
If Washington continues producing the same dysfunction and economic pressure, it’s not hard to imagine a similar outcome.
Only this time, the stakes may be even higher.
The Coming Mid-Term Election Shock
The country doesn’t exactly have a lot of spare tires left…
The debt is through the roof and we’re still recovering from Biden-era policies that wrecked ordinary Americans’ wealth.
And right in the middle of all of that, Trump’s own allies aren’t allowing him to clean up the mess.
I’m not advocating for blind loyalty here, but the guy was elected to implement an agenda. To do that, he needs judges, U.S. attorneys and administration officials in place. That’s how government actually works.
Yet we’ve seen Republicans use procedural tricks to make filling some of those positions next to impossible.
Trump has been fighting Democrats, the media, activist judges and lawfare for years. That’s not new.
What many Trump supporters didn’t expect was to see resistance coming from people who asked Republican voters for their support.
People who promised to secure the border, rein in spending, reform government and help advance the plan voters sent Trump to Washington to pursue.
We cast our votes, believing we were sending a very clear message to Washington. And increasingly, I’m looking around and wondering whether anyone in Washington actually heard it.
If Democrats succeed in reclaiming Congress, they’ve already made it clear what they intend to do.
At the same time, if Republicans continue creating obstacles from within, President Trump may be on the verge of facing the most significant political betrayal of his career.
At some point, you stop asking whether these politicians are going to fix the problem and start asking how you’re going to deal with it if they don’t.
Frankly, that’s where my head is these days.
I’d much rather focus on understanding the risks, identifying the opportunities and making sure my family and finances are prepared for whatever comes next.
Regardless of what happens in the midterms, I’ve never been comfortable leaving my future in the hands of politicians.
The people who tend to do best during periods of upheaval like this are usually the ones paying attention while everyone else is assuming things will work themselves out.
Our goal is to help you do exactly that.
More to come…
