403: “Environmental Gardens”

Victoria’s Allan Murr invented a highly efficient system for growing food, using a pyramid-shaped planter. His little ‘pyramid scheme’ has grown to a point where he and his daughters/volunteers deliver food to community members in need in their city. Thirty years ago, Mississauga author Liz Primeau literally wrote the book on front yard gardens. She tells of how “everybody in the neighbourhood had lawns. I thought, why couldn’t I make a garden in the front that was as nice as the garden in the back? It did start a movement toward front yard gardens.” Primeau continues to be a strong advocate of ridding the world of the monoculture that is the front lawn. At the Christmas Hill Nature Conservatory in Victoria, volunteer John McLean learns patience, while investing years of his time in intricate restoration work. Sarah Laing fine-tunes her garden on the edge of a forest, to find the right ecological balance, where food will flourish to feed her family.

Season 4 features a wide-range of gardeners from across Canada (Toronto, Mississauga, Victoria, Vancouver, Kamloops, Regina, and in the community of Kincardine on Lake Huron) including obsessed plant collectors, lawn bowlers, nature sanctuary volunteers, marathon runners, writers, and renowned visual artists. Their shared love of gardening helps contribute to their personal health and vitality.
