Kids’ Food Basket grows tens of thousands of pounds of produce to feed west Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — What started with a garden hose and a few washing totes has become a thriving urban agriculture operation feeding thousands of children across west Michigan.
Kids’ Food Basket, a community-based food equity nonprofit serving Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa, and Allegan counties, now operates two farms — one in Grand Rapids and a satellite location in Holland — that together produce tens of thousands of pounds of all-naturally grown produce each year.
“When I came here six years ago, we had just completed the fence that protects our crops,” said Jason Lundberg, senior farm manager at Kids’ Food Basket. “We had a garden hose and some totes that we could wash food in. Now, seven years later, we’ve come a long way from that very humble beginning.”
The Grand Rapids and Holland farms can produce anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 ponds of produce. The harvest includes everything from hot and sweet peppers to blackberries, watermelons and lettuce — crops chosen based on direct input from community partners.
“We spend our winter months boots on the ground, face to face with our community partners, learning about how the previous season went,” Lundberg said. “What can we tweak? What can we change? What can we add to the menu? The last thing we wanna do is grow food that doesn’t make it out the door.”
The produce is distributed through several channels. It goes into Kids’ Food Basket’s flagship Sack Supper program, which serves approximately 11,500 daily evening meals to 68 schools across four counties. Lundberg says they push more peppers and tomatoes into the bags when school is in session.
