Across Montreal, gardens, farms and public land are being used to share more than food. They can create connections between people who might otherwise never meet, put fresh produce into community kitchens and markets, or simply make something growing nearby available to whoever needs it.
The common thread is what happens when growing turns outward — when the work, land and harvest are used to benefit people beyond a single household.
Along a bike path in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, hundreds of fruit trees and bushes have been planted with one unusual distinction. Anyone can pick from them.
Apples, pears, Asian pears, plums, mulberries, raspberries and currants line stretches of the route, part of a project city councillor Ryan Young helped launch around 2012.
“The whole idea of it is, you know, you’re cycling or you’re walking and you can just step off the path and eat some fresh organic fruit,” Young said.
More than a decade later, many of the trees are mature and residents have learned when to look for what is ripening.
“People are even competing with each other, like, to get to the fruit first,” Young said.
