One year later, Growing Food Growing People’s St. Louis’ urban farm is reaching more people in the West End
Lee-Pulliam envisions the West End property becoming a “living classroom” where families can learn how to grow and prepare their own food while building connections with one another.

“I wanted to give the land a year to just do whatever it wanted to do. But most importantly, relationships. We’ve had a lot of community members stop by to see what is going on. Who is this lady.”
Now, Growing Food Growing People reaches more than 1,200 people each year, providing free vegetables, and creating opportunities for young people to learn about gardening through a summer camp.
The organization is also teaching women how to grow their own food through Gardening 101.
That work comes as food costs continue to put pressure on household budgets. The U.S. Department of Agriculture projects food-at-home prices will increase 2.4% in 2026, while fresh vegetable prices are expected to rise 5.7%.
For some, learning to grow food can provide another way to stretch resources and build greater independence.
For Cyeria Jackson, Gardening 101 was a chance to learn directly from someone with experience.
“With this class I said what a perfect way to immerse myself and talk to an expert and learn from an expert,” Jackson said. “Food sustains us and you see what grocery prices are doing. Why put your livelihood in the thing that gives you life in the hands of something that you can’t control.”
