◆ How to Remove Coins from Coin Holders

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The objective of using coin holders is to serve as protection for all types of coins; including gold coins, silver dollars, and other rare coins, but sometimes coin holders do more harm than good. This can result in coins that are scratched, stained, toned, or otherwise damaged. Ultimately, this translates into coins that have diminished value and quality. Having said that, this is why it is critical to learn how to properly remove coins from coin holders. So, let us get started:

1. Wash your hands. Oil is almost always present on our hands and fingertips and this can cause damage to your coins. With this in mind, it is imperative that you make every effort to avoid leaving fingerprints on your coins. Make it a habit to wash your hands prior to handling your coins.

2. Pick up coin tongs or use gloves. As an extra measure to prevent your coins from getting accidentally damaged or tainted, use gloves or coin tongs to handle them. Be sure to handle only the edges of the coins.

3. Study the coin holder in detail. If possible, study a coin holder that does not contain any coins so that you can you can determine how it works. Does it make use of staples, screws, glues or tape? Sometimes there are seams, sometimes there aren’t any. Either way, take your time and figure out how to remove the coin in the safest manner possible.

4. Use the right tools to remove the coins. Prepare a safe area for the coins to land. Use towels, soft cloths, or any other material that is safe for coins to touch should they accidentally fall. If you need to remove the coin from a holder, use a tool with an edge that is narrow and flat. If you need to cut it out, use scissors that are high quality and sharp.

5. Be gentle as you remove the coins. Don’t exert excessive force on the coin holder as this may cause damage to the coin. If you are cutting the coin holder open, be sure to cut in a circular fashion around the coin. Once ¾ of the area around the coin has been cut, gently pull the holder apart and let the coin fall in the safe area that you have prepared. Again, don’t forget to wash your hands prior to handling the coins, or better yet, use cotton gloves.
Whether your coins have been protected in coin holders for a long period of time, or if you’re attempting to improve how they’re stored, it’s critical to remove coin holders in a proper and safe manner. Wash your hands, use the right tools, and take your time to figure out how to best remove the coins from their holders.
