How Silver Coin Buyers Can Help You to Identify the Value of Walking Liberty Half Dollars

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

As you approach silver coin buyers to buy or sell silver coins, you’ll likely encounter Walking Liberty half dollars along the way. When it comes to a coin’s metal content, U.S. dimes, quarters and half dollars minted in 1964 or earlier contain 90% silver content. However, in later years, the metal content used was changed due to the increased price of silver. While there are many U.S. coins that are referred to as ‘Liberty’ coins, the most significant of these is the Walking Liberty half dollar. Also known as “The Walker,” the Walking Liberty half dollar is composed of 90 percent silver and 10% copper.

Here’s how to find the value of your Walking Liberty halves:

Identify the coin

There were a total of 485 million Walking Liberty half dollars minted from 1916 to 1947. The front of the coin displays an image of a walking Lady Liberty with the word “Liberty,” while an eagle and the word “Half Dollar” can be seen on the reverse. Ensure that what you have is a Walking Liberty half dollar before you attempt to determine its value.

Look for the coin’s date and mint mark

You can locate the Walking Liberty half dollar’s year of production at the bottom of the front of the coin. Its mint mark, which tells you where the coin was minted, should be visible on the lower left hand side of the reverse of the coin. Walking Liberty half dollars that were in limited production and therefore are considered rare are from 1921, 1938-D, 1916, 1916-S and 1917-D. The rarer a coin, the more value it has in the eyes of silver coin buyers, coin collectors, and coin investors.

Grade the coin

Finally, have the coin graded by a professional in order to have an idea of its estimated value. You can send the coin to the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), which are third party grading companies that charge a fee for their services, or you can approach a coin expert or a coin dealer to do the job for you. Several factors are evaluated in assessing a coin’s grade, including the coin’s wear, damage, scratches, anomalies, marks, etc. All of these items affect the coin’s grade, and subsequently its value.

In summary, before you approach silver coin buyers to purchase or sell coins, it’s important to know their value first. To find the value of silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars, properly identify the coin first. Next, look for the coin’s date and mint mark. Coins that were produced in certain years are considered rarer and therefore more valuable than others. Lastly, have the coin graded by a professional to receive an estimate of its value.
