How to Identify a Double-Die Coin

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Double-die refers to coins with design elements that
have been double stamped or printed twice. Evidence of a double stamp can be
frequently seen on the date of the coin. In some cases, they are considered
quite valuable.
If you
are going to engage in selling coins in Atlanta,
here are a
few ways in which you can verify whether you have a double-die coin in your
possession.

1.
Examine
the coin face up.
Use a magnifying glass, loupe or
microscope so that you can see all the details on the coin without having to
worry about missing anything. Take your time and take note of the blemishes and
flaws that you see.

2.
Focus
on the appearance of the printed image.
If there is
an overlap or more than one edge on the coin, then it is safe to say that it is
a double-die coin.

3.
Inspect
the date on the coin.
If you notice any smudges or thicker
outlines on the numbers of the coin, this may indicate that the coin has
polishing errors. If some numbers appear to be blotchier than others, it is
likely that you are not holding a double-die coin, but again, one that has
polishing errors.

4.
Look
for the uppercase letter below the date on the coin.
If
there are two uppercase letters on the coin, this tells you that the coin is certainly
a double-die as there should only be one uppercase letter.

5.
Check
out the serifs of the coin.
If you happen to see any horizontal
splits or breaks, there may be evidence of a second die below the original
imprint. Be thorough. When selling coins in Atlanta, being precise and
meticulous can mean the difference between a few dollars and a few hundred.

6.
Look
for inconsistencies in the edges of the letters and the design on the coin.
Be
sure to use good lighting so that you do not overlook any details.
If you wish to be successful when selling coins in
Atlanta, it is crucial to be as meticulous as you can when it comes to identifying
anomalies such as double-die coins. Examine the coin, focus on its appearance,
and inspect its date. Examine the uppercase letter below the date on the coin,
look at its serifs, and keep an eye out for inconsistencies with the coin’s
letters and designs.
