Hard Currency Auctions - Australia & New Zealand

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I’ve used this strategy quite a few times with a high level of success. I look for legal tender coin lots that sell at a decent discount to face and contain a good mix of coins.

I like these lots because I can pick out the coins I can sell at a premium and then, if I have to, I can turn around and dump the remaining coins as foreign exchange.

I also like these types of auctions because it makes looking for varieties and errors more efficient. When you have dozens, or hundreds, of coins of a particular type it’s easier to look for varieties. An internet search can usually turn up some sources for major currencies.

Do some research to determine the general discount a particular currency have been going for on Ebay.

For Australian and New Zealand currency I look for a good mix of coins. An auction for $100 worth of $2 coins is pretty much a foreign currency play only. I am looking for a little of everything, 10c, 20c, 50c and $1. In particular be on the look-out for .50c and $1 commemorative type varieties.

I like this auction: AU & NZ Auction I came pretty close to buying it last week but I didn’t really have time to sell them. It has since been relisted. It seems particularly well suited for someone to cut their teeth on. There are not too many coins and the mix is good. The .20c and .50c pieces should move pretty quick. Just remember, when you list these coins make sure to call out the animals that are on it. If you have to do an internet search to determine what the animal is then do it. If it’s a plant include the latin name, doesn’t hurt. Also, keep in mind that the large .50c pieces may be unmachinable and take your envelope above 1 ounce, price accordingly.

This lot is for the gambler or the truly committed: $650 in Australian Coins I bought a huge lot like this once an it seemed to be an unsearched circulation batch. I found lots of commemoratives and scarce circulation varieties. The problem is that the collector market on Ebay can’t really absorb this many coins in a single week. Also, there are going to be lots of duplicates. I was able to sell about $30 of face for over $100, of course that was primarily from the best coins. If you don’t want to be selling these one-by-one for the next year you could cherry pick and dump the rest for foreign exchange. You may be able to get a better premium if you break it up into smaller batches that are more palatable to buyers.

Good luck.
