How to Buy Gold Online Safely: 5 Tips for First-Time Buyers
If you’ve been looking to invest in gold but don’t know where to start, this guide will walk you through buying gold online and some common pitfalls. Hopefully you’ll walk away with a better understanding of the online gold market. If you have any questions, be sure to talk to a commission-free broker. We love to answer them for you.
1. Understand spot versus premium pricing
When you look for the price of gold online, you’ll see the spot price. Spot price is what the commodity is trading at, give or take. Retail investors and buyers are always going to pay spot plus premium. The premium is what accounts for minting, storage, transportation, market making, et cetera.
So when you’re buying gold, it’s okay that you’re not paying the spot price. But you should be aware of the premium or general markup. For example, if you compare three different brokers and broker A and B are within a few dollars of each other, that’s fine. But if there’s a significant, over 5% jump from the other broker, then that would be something to worry about. You can check live spot prices any time.
2. Buy from a reputable dealer
The government does as much as it can to reasonably protect investors. But the reality is that metals exchanges are not regulated the same way that stock exchanges are. So there is a little bit more burden on you, the investor, to do your research and make sure it is the right, legitimate dealer.
Start at a high level, and look at reviews, licenses, certifications, history. Here at CMI, we’ve been around since 1973; we have decades of service to our clients, and we’re well known in our industry. When you look for a reputable dealer, make sure they have green flags, like updated content, live prices, and gold that is market-weighted.
3. Protect yourself from scams
There are more gold scams than ever with the prevalence of AI and easy-to-build websites. Here are some obvious red flags, straight from the federal agencies tracking them.
Government impersonation and courier scams
Scammers pose as federal agents or tech support, claim your money is at risk, and tell you to buy gold bars and hand them to a courier. The FBI counted at least 1,737 of these courier pickups nationwide from 2023 to May 2025, about $186 million in losses, and roughly 98% of victims were over 60. Their tip list starts with this:
“The U.S. government and legitimate businesses will never ask you to purchase gold or other precious metals.”
The FTC goes further:
“‘Buy gold bars and hand them to someone’ is a scam. It doesn’t matter who they say you’re giving the bars to. Don’t give bars to a courier, and don’t deliver them. It’s a scam.”
“‘Withdraw cash and give it to [anyone]’ is a scam. Always. Every time. It’s a scam.”
If you get that call, hang up and report it at ic3.gov. And talk to your parents about this one, because these crews target older Americans on purpose.
High-pressure telemarketing and gold IRA fraud
Straight from the CFTC:
“Precious metals frauds are on the rise and scammers prey on fears related to the durability of the United States financial system. These frauds promise ‘safe’ investments, but the reality is the fraudsters sell the metals at inflated prices and charge high commissions.”
“Gold, silver, or other precious metals scams often begin with an unsolicited email, phone call, or brochure in the mail.”
In one case the CFTC cites, a dealer and IRA custodian charged nearly $150,000 in commissions and fees on a $300,000 retirement rollover. If somebody reaches out to you about a limited-time gold opportunity, it’s almost certainly a scam.
Leverage and financing offers
Some operators offer a large amount of metal for a fraction of its value, with the rest financed, promising that rising prices will build your equity. Falling prices shrink your equity too, and once it drops below a minimum, the account closes and you’re left with nothing. Per the CFTC, it is illegal for dealers to offer leveraged or financed purchases unless your metal is delivered within 28 days. Pay in full for metal that gets delivered.
If you want to dive deeper, we broke down how to spot gold and silver scams in its own article, from fake coins to phony storage.
4. Make a plan before you buy
Gold is different than stocks because, depending on what you buy, you’re going to need a place to store it. You need to understand the difference between safes and vaults, storing it with a custodian, and storing it at home.
A home safe keeps your metal close. A bank deposit box adds security but comes with fees, and the bank’s insurance doesn’t cover what’s inside. A depository or custodian offers purpose-built, insured storage, which is also the requirement for a gold IRA.
Gold is loved for being a tangible asset. If you’re going to take the time to buy gold and store it at home, you owe it to yourself to protect it with the proper safe. We put together a guide on storing your gold that walks through the options.
5. Do your research
Read market news and keep up to date with what’s going on. We offer a monthly update on price movements and global metals news, like our June and May 2026 editions in the market news feed. You want to be up to date with what’s going on, so that if somebody makes you an offer, you can evaluate if it’s fair or not.
Adopt a long-term mindset
Investing in gold is an investment in your future, so adopt a long-term mindset. If you’re reading this article, we’re assuming that you’re not a commodities trader. We assume that you want to invest in gold for the long run, and we like the axiom that time in the market is greater than timing the market. Gold is volatile at times, and its price can go up and down. But historically, it’s trended up. If you buy and hold gold for the long term, you want to tune out the noise.
When you’re ready, track daily spot prices, browse gold coins and bullion, or talk with one of our commission-free brokers. We love to answer questions, and we’ll never ask you for a sale.
