Another La. Sinkhole Cavern 'Closer to Dome Wall' Than Officials Thought Concerns Them
Another Louisiana sinkhole cavern leased by Texas Brine LLC is closer to the salt dome outer wall and the Highway than previously thought, according to an official notice Friday morning.
“The Vertical Seismic Profile Data that has been provided to us by Texas Brine shows that Oxy Geismar Cavern #1 is closer to the outer wall of the Napoleonville Salt Dome than recently anticipated,” Assumption Parish officials have stated on their sinkhole website.
“Although Oxy Geismar Cavern #1 was previously thought to have no issues, this recent development does cause concern for Assumption Parish Officials,” the officials have stated.
Oxy Geismar Cavern #1 is 900’ northeast of Oxy Geismar Cavern #3, the cavern already known to be failing.
Officials estimate that Cavern #1 is 950’ from Highway 70, to the outer wall of the Napoleonville Salt Dome.
More information about this latest concerning revelation is to be provided at a March 19 public meeting.
“Although the upcoming 3D Seismic Survey may provide more information on the western flank of the Napoleonville Salt Dome, we have asked Texas Brine and DNR officials to provide information at an upcoming community meeting,” officials said.
That meeting is scheduled to be at Assumption Parish Community Center, Tuesday, March 19, 2012 at 6:00 p.m.
Assumption parish officials stated that on Monday, they will meet with Governor Bobby Jindal to address this ongoing emergency situation in Bayou Corne community and to request continuous support from all involved state agencies.
Jindal has continually refused to visit the emergency area in his state and has even evaded questions about his missing in action status.
It has been estimated that below the “sinkhole” is 500 billion cubic feet of gas, 200 million gallons of crude oil.

How large is the effected salt dome complex? It won’t stop collapsing until it’s all dissolved or the ocean reaches saturation. Some of these salt dome complexes are comparable in size to an entire mountain range. Has the salinity of the Atlantic ocean been effected?
The usually quoted size of the dome is 1-mile by 3-miles – at the top of it. The concern is the salinity firstly of Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou, then all of Lake Verette – and possibly the Gulf of Mexico, but not the Atlantic. Louisiana is on the Gulf of Mexico. The collapsing dome is some 100 miles or so from the Gulf. That said, most of the area south of the dome is swampland.
There’s no benefit to Bobby Jindal stepping forward in this matter. If he steps forward, it gives the appearance that he is taking responsibility for this debacle and that could result in criminal charges. Best he stay out of it and let the companies that are responsible take the heat. This is a tar baby that no one wants to be part of. He will most likely lose a re-election anyway. Lose and walk away? Or lose and be charged? What a choice.
