Social bookmarking and Bloggers

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

What are Social bookmarking sites? As the name suggests, it helps people save their favorite websites. Sites like Delicious, StumbleUpon and Digg help people record and access these bookmarks easily for free. What makes it more interesting? These bookmarks are available for others to view.

Think about your blog here. When a reader visit your blog and find it interesting enough to add it to his list of bookmarks, you get exposure. His fellow ‘bookmarkers’ would find your blog. Your content can get more exposure than you can imagine.

Social bookmarking sites

It takes a lot of time to add new sites and get listed in these bookmarking sites. The best social bookmarking  sites would be StumbleUpon and Delicious. They offer easy sign up process as well as many options to follow others. As a blogger, sites with an easy signup process give you some relief.

Delicious might look a little plain and ‘cartoonish,’ but it would give you some decent traffic. StumbleUpon is perhaps the most useful bookmarking site, it gave me more that 100 pageviews per day (and I was only starting out). It continues to be useful in delivering traffic.

I’d suggest Squidoo too. The problem with Squidoo is that it’s confusing and takes a lot of time and effort to succeed. Digg, on the other hand, is very easy to begin with. Digg is not likely to drive traffic into your blog, if you are not writing relevant posts.

Social bookmarking and Search Engine Optimization

The most important point here is “Backlinks.” Submitting links to these bookmarking websites create backlinks. Some bookmarking sites like Delicious provide more specific options (keywords, tags, titles). We can use these options to rank higher in search engines as well.

Search engines love bookmarking sites and the submitted content is almost immediately indexed. In fact, when search engines index the bookmark of your post, your site and its content gets well indexed too. (This is a very good opportunity.)

These websites are mostly community-centered, which means that hundreds of thousands of people visit these sites. Don’t you think that at least one of these visitors find your site interesting?

Try to experiment with all these social bookmarking sites. Remember that it’s quite time consuming to submit your links to all of them. Still, it’s worth it if you manage to find the right ones for you!

What sites did you submit your links to? Do you find them useful in getting some traffic?
